Does anyone know a paint that is impervious to DEET. I have a stock that I would like to paint or have painted (Rickbin???) and wonder if this is anything out that is absolutely impervious to DEET. Everything that I have tried gets sticky or worse when exposed to DEET.

Never had any complaints about Polane. What concentration of DEET? I can test it.

I have been using the 100 % concentrate. If polane will hold up to that, I'll get with you for a new paint job. We use the DEET because we hunt exotics in the summer when the ticks and chiggers are most active.

We have our share of those vermin here in SC. I usually put a coat of matte finish polyurethane over paint and that holds up to Deet. But you won't get as nice a job as Rick Bin can do.Rick.

Tex,
I reviewed the US Army research on DEET a few years back, and they found that there wasn't any reason that they could find to go over about 30% to 33% DEET. I look for an insect repellant in that range, and it has served me well in Africa.
Last time aorund I used the Amway formulation that I bought from a friend who is a dealer. It is a civilian formulation of what the Army issues.
I use permethrin on pants and socks, and that keeps the ticks off. I don't have chiggers to worry about.

I have also used the 30 % Deep Woods Off and it too will soften paint, varnish, etc. I try to wash up after applying it, but invariably it gets back on the hands and ends up where you don't want it. I was hoping that RickBin had the solution and with his willingness to test, feel that polane may solve the problem.

RickBin, is polane an epoxy based paint or polyurethane?

Anthony, ask John Lewis if he knows me. Then ask him if any of my rifles are ready.Rick.

DEET actually is a plastic solvent, so while some paints may hold up better than others, none will be impervious. DEET will even dissolve the plastic used in eye glass lenses.
The military has been having great success with a repellent named SS220, which could surpass DEET. SS220 is based on a black pepper extract and is supposed to be available next year.

Thanks JOG, that is good information and I will be looking for it to be on the market. I can't stand the way DEET damages everything it contacts.
