Lets say for whatever reason all you had was a spear, maybe a survival situation, or you are living during the ice age.. i've been pondering this for a few days... whether if you had a good sharp spear with a long shaft maybe 6-7' feet long and if a bear was to charge or try to maul you out of a hunger how long it would take for the bear to expire after you speared em.. provided you speared em right thru the neck or thru the brisket into the heart. Yes, I saw the movie THE EDGE, and NO that is not why i've been thinking about this. I actually saw a spear from Cold steel and was wondering what kind of damage this thing could do and then it got me thinking whether you could potentially save your life from a bear or other dangerous For this conversation I wanna focus just on big bears, because that is what I feel is the most dangerous animal to face close quarters and most likely animal you would encounter in the u.s. and canada and even in europe and russia.. The only animal more dangerous would be a tiger but chances of running into one are slim. I wanna hear what some experienced bear hunters have to say. The question here is not whether or not I could actually spear the bear.. lets assume that you did spear the bear, how long would it take for it to die.. .and could you then run away or would he just chase you down with a spear hanging out of em and maul you.. Obviously if your getting charged at 40mph theres no way you could pull off a spear thrust, but say a close quarters slow charge and you had a chance to spear em pretty good.

I don't know if a spear would do it quickly enough. I'd feel much better with my .338 Win Mag.

I replace valve cover gaskets every 50K, if they don't need them sooner...

Sure,
If I had a long enough spear and was riding in a helicopter and the bear was chained to a tree asleep, blind, missing all it's legs and head and was ready to die anyway.

Yeah, you could do it, but you'd have to use a manly spear, not one of those little piss ant gopher spear. It's be even better if you had a half a dozen buddies with manly spears. And best yet would be half a dozen buddies with at least two that you could out run (always have redundancy).

Polska you might could but I don't think that I'd want to try.
Did chase a black bear off and island once long ago when all I had was an axe.

Seems like somebody a while back posted an article or story about an old Eskimo Man that killed bears with a spear. Polar bears maybe?? miles
Look out for number 1, don't step in number 2.

Get yourself a copy of Sidney Huntington's Shadows on the Koyukuk and read about how it was done by those who have done it.

I have been false charged more than once by black bears and they move incredibly quick for their size. I have seen my share of grizzly in MT and browns in Alaska. Cannot imagine if a full grown grizzly or brown decided he wanted to attack me and having to defend myself with a spear. But then again this thread is either a joke or written by a city dweller lib.
Find a zoo in your city, smoke some weed, fashion a spear and climb into enclosure housing a bear and give it a try. Pics would be good

Medeval hunting spears had a cross bar at the head to prevent large game from traveling up the spear to bite one.
