Cruising around gunbroker and was surprised to see what some of these carbines are going for. What am I missing. Are the carbines kinda rare? I put one on hold in .308 just because I want to play with one and maybe flip it over as trade bait. When I started hunting about 40 years ago, lots of folks carried these in upstate N.Y.

What can you guys tell me about them?

I've looked at them, too. There aren't too many carbines, and most of them are in 30-06. Short actions are less common in general and short-action carbines even more so.

JB's articles touting the virtues of the 760/7600/6 aren't hurtimg sales any, either.

Carbines are rare. But there are no short actions and long actions. The receiver length and pump throw are the same no matter whether 308 or .30-06. This may help.

If you did any research before posting your post, you would have found that the total amount of production of Carbine rifles is probably less then 15% of all the production.

Add to that the fact that the modern design 760 was a product of the carbine rifle, since the standard action 760 had a tube that the forearm rode on - and that the carbines barrel was not long enough to accommodate the tube - hence they had to design a free float two piece trombone type action tube and redesign the forearm with a cap and a screw.

Without having the specifications in front of me, I can tell you that the odd caliber offerings is the ones that commands a premium price.
Calibers such as 257 Roberts, .222 Remington, 300 Savage.
At one time - producing a rifle with a caliber that had someone else's name on it was a no no for Remington.
The only exception was the .270 / .243 and .308 Winchester...

sorry - I meant that 760/7600 chambered for short action cartridges are less common, not that the receiver/action was different.

Hey, Kurt! I was just working behind the counter at Freeman's Saturday morning. We sold a 760 in .35 Rem in near new condition that morning.

How much $$ did it sell for? Was it a carbine?

IIRC there were more 760 carbines produced chambered for .308 than 7600 carbines chambered for .308. The two carbines I've seen have heavier barrels than the rifles and they balance the same.

I've got a corncob fore stocked carbine in .270 that shoots way better than it should. No problem shooting under an inch with several loads. The aluminum "recoil" pad is not ideal but I cannot bring myself to change it because it comes to the shoulder like lightning. As a pure hunting rifle it don't get much better unless made of stainless.

Daniel Boone , your information on the 760 is quite flawed ! There were Thousands of Carbines made before 1968 ( which is when the short tube actions were introduced on all grades ) the ADLs and BDLs received the short tubes in 1965 ! The reason for the redesign was to do away with the metal to metal contact in the action that caused it to rattle . The action tube and action bar were redesigned to use an o-ring to eliminate the rattles . The new wood was much more attractive than the old Stocks .
