SUG, they're around and not umcommon at all. Some good ones too from what I'm told. You get up here PM me and I'll get you some names and phone #'s. Where ya movin' to in Mo.?
Squirrel hunting with a dog is something I have never done. I believe at this stage in my life and as much as I love to hunt squirrels I owe it to myself to try it.
99...sounds like some relationships not far south of here!

My best friend growing up had a Boston terrier that was heck on squirrels. We used to road hunt--drive the old logging roads/trails in the Mark Twain National Forest with "Dotty Lou" working the woods out to about 100 yds. She'd tree up and we'd park the truck, grab a rifle and a shotgun, and head for her location. Most of the time, it was squirrel on the ground really quick.

We always used my uncle's coon dogs (they'd tree ANYthing) and his Airedales, now and then, but virtually any kind of dog would work. I think practically any terrier would be ideal for that.
It's just gotta be a fiesty, rambunctious little dog, Jack Russell, rat terrier, practically anything will work well, if you work them right, mutts included. You just have to break them into it, right. Larger dogs, like my uncle's coonhounds, scare the squirrels too much, and they tree too quickly, little dogs are better, IMHO, but when we were kids, we used what we had. The positive side to a small dog, they don't eat much.....
You can roll a turd in peanuts, dip it in chocolate, and it still ain't no damn Baby Ruth.

I have an old story (20yrs?). Most folks here know that coon dogs prices varied with the price of hides. This story comes from the high side of the dog prices.
I have a good friend that always hunted coon and always had dogs for sale. I hunted coon with him many times, and he had a prefrence for a couple of hounds and a cur dog. A hound could would follow a circle track, round and round, but a cur would get tired and go looking for the coon. To my knowledge he never hunted squirrels with a dog. We were still hunters for squirrel.
One day an out of state truck pulled into his driveway asking if he had any squirrel dogs. He said that he had couple that he called that. After a short visit, they decided to walk the hedge row behind his house with a cur dog. The dog treed a squirrel in about a block. Maybe they knew each other. My buddy had to let the cur go for $100. Life is good.

Didn't hunt in MO but did just across the river in KS with the hardwoods. Used my beagle Barney who would chase the squirrels round and round the tree until I got my shot. Barney got hit by a car. I still get a lump in my throat more than 40 years later thinking about what a hunter that old boy was.

I have lived in rural Missouri for about 8 years and have been hunting squirrels with a dog for the last 5. It's alot more fun than hunting alone and it's nice to have my best buddy along with me. Adds to the memories.

Now that my house in dogless, I'd gladly consider a squirrel dog. I think it'd be great fun for the boys and I. Growing up my dad and grandpa always had beagles, but unfortunately farming practices have about done away with cottontails around here. I think there are more in town than in the country. Sad. So, that decreases my desire for a beagle.
Does anyone know of squirrel dog breeds that are no/low shedders? That'd make it a bit more appealing for the wife and one of my boys is somewhat allergic.
