Skip the Hornady Auto Charge and save a few headaches.

A year or two ago, I did an article comparing the Hornady balance scale, the Lyman digital scale, the Hornady powder measure and the Lee Perfect Powder Measure for repeatability.

The surprising result was that for ball powders, the Lee measure was the most repeatable. For short stick powders like Varget, the Lee measure and the Hornady balance scale tied for most repeatable.

Wow, really? I haven't seen or heard much feedback on this unit, other than Rocky's experience. What makes you say that it's a headache?

Im using the RCBS charge master 1500. I've compared the loads from it with the RCBS 10-10 scale and its right on.

I'll send you a PM so no one will accuse me of bashing Hornady.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll keep that in mind when my Lyman quits on me...

For a manual thrower, I've been very happy with my Harrell's.

I've been using a Pact electronic dispenser and scale for several years now. Its the identical unit that RCBS marketed for a number of years prior to the new Chargemaster unit. I've never had any problems with it.
I also use a RCBS 10-10 scale. I check the first 2-3 thrown charges from the Pact against the 10-10 every time I fire it up to make sure its calibrated correctly and they have been dead on every time. I also check that the calibration is staying where it should when I'm loading volume, again, its always been right on. JME

+1 on the Harrell's.
It's a sturdy well made product that is built by a small U.S business. I've personally only bought the one powder measure from them, but they were very nice to deal with.

Please copy me that PM, Higbean. I'd like to know what you mean - and may be able to offer a solution.

I like my Lee Perfect, but if I were to ever replace it, I would give a look at a Quick Measure by Johnson Design Specialties

I've been really happy with my Hornady Auto-charge. From what I have read, the first batch to hit the shelves had some issues, but that has been corrected. I have used mine a lot for 308, 22-250, 223 and all have been very, very consistent.

When I first bought the unit I double checked charge weights with my RCBS beam scale, it was always dead on.

I use the Lee Perfect Powder Measure to load the pan of my Redding balance beam scale to about 0.2 grains light, and then top up with a trickler. Works well for me using H322, Varget, and H4831.

I have the Hornady dispenser and have been happy with it. Only problem I've had is that it doesn't like to throw IMR 4350 accurately. Lots of overages, but I'm also too impatient for the slow speed.

You and I are in the same boat here...I actually came across The Quick Measure a few months back. So I called and the man who designed it is the one who picked up the phone. He told me he came up with the design 40 odd years ago when he wasnt satisfied with what was out there. Never made another until after he retired and thought he'd make a few to take to gun shows...and now, well, read up on them and make your own decision. I'll buy one when my Lee craps out or I have the extra $$ not going for something else.
