I am interested in building a 6mm-06, only because i have a few hundred 270 cases kicking around and i hear ALOT of good news about the 6mm-06 opposed to the super 22's (was about to steer in that direction)

My question is would anybody be able to provide load information about this interesting cartridge. And before we all start bashing or veering off topic i want a 6mm-06, thats it.

Thanks

build one if you want one...a guy that shoots at our range has one on a left hand 700 BDL. IMHO a 243 bore is as good or better than the fast twist .22's...probably better....

I have a 240 Weatherby mag, which is essentially a 6mm-06 with a belt. You might want to use starting load data for it - reducing accordingly and applying all the usual caveats about believing what you read on the internet, etc, etc, etc....

I considered the same choice but eventually built a 240 weatherby as I like the factory load option. Also, I do not like shooting cartridges marked 270 Win in a 6mm or other rifle. The wildcat bug bit me hard, cost me lots of money and now only two remain and I do not even like to load for them anymore and they are just improved cartridges, not true wildcats. for a big game rifle, I would go with the 240, for fun or varmints, the 6mm06 would be my choice as brass is cheaper, the 6mm06 may be more accurate with out the belt and excessive headspace. good luck.

I assume you mean "excessive free-bore"...I've read a few places that the 240 is the only Weatherby chamber that does not have the long Wtby free-bore. A quick check of the reamer drawing on the Clymer website shows a free-bore length of .170"...hardly excessive IMHO.

A local gunsmith has for a number of years done his "coyote through deer" hunting in Missouri with a 6mm-06 with perfect satisfaction. He hunts mostly in the flood plains of the Missouri River. He has to replace the barrel every 1100 to 1200 rounds. I believe that his Mauser is on its fourth barrel. Most of us couldn't afford such short barrel life, but it's no problem for him because he works on his own rifle. I've forgotten the details of his loads, but he hasn't reported any complaints from his coyote or deer "clients."

rembo, really, I can't say re freebore as my 240 is a model 70 with a shilen barrel at 24". I am told that if the particular weatherby cartridge calls for freebore, the smith really has to chamber that way or else there will excessive pressure using weatherby factory loads. kenny jarrett had some interesting test results on this subject with a weatherby he was chambering.

Excellent choice in a hot 6mm. The 6mm-06 leaves the 240 Weatherby and the 6/284 in the dust, LOL!

I just finished building one a a 700 LA, with a 28" Stainless Super Match Pac-Nor barrel, Sendero countour. I am very happy with it.

Right now the load I am shooting, which groups in the 3's and low 4's, is 54 grains of IMR4831, with a Hornady 87 Grain HPBT. This gives me vels of 3675-3700fps, which is the goal I had set for a long range prairie dog load. Last month over in New Mexico, I was knocking off those poor dogs in a 17mph cross wind at 400+ yds, with only one mil dot windage leade, and hitting 7 out of 10.

A couple of recomendations, Rl22 also worked very well, but I got just a little better groups with IMR4831. Start a little below my load, just to check pressures etc. I loaded them hotter than the 54 grains in February, but as it has gotten hot here in Arizona, pressure crept in, and I backed off a little. The other is twist, I built mine 1/10, but now I kind of wish I would have gone 8 or 9. The 105 grain A-Max shot really good groups in mine at 100 yards, but opened up at 200. I am sure I needed a litlle faster twist. Next time that is what I will do. Also as to barrel life, most of use are getting around 1700-1800 rounds per barrel. Thats a lot of shooting if you are not shooting matches.

Good LUCK

A bud converted his worthless M77V 25-06 to a 28" Douglass-barreled 6mm-06 several years ago and was extremely happy with it. Unfortunately he passed away since then and I can't quote his loads, other than what I recall about them.

He formed his cases from "virgin" R-P 25-06 brass; used a load of H4831SC and was very happy with 80gr Btips for woodchucks. Know he also dabbled some with IMR and RL powders when he first had it built, but was much more impressed with the H4831SC though.

I never got to enjoy it with him much before he passed on, but he was killing 'chucks with it out to 800yds with disgustin' regularity, the summer he went to his reward. Have tried to pry it away from the widder for the past three years, but she won't part with it....yet.

If three or more people think you're a dimwit, chances are at least one of them is right.
