looking for a 150-168 gr bullet to shoot paper out to 800 yds with that will also exit a 200lb whitetail at 50 yds. Any ideas?

I would think the 168g NBT would about fit the bill if not shot over 3K fps.
The 165g NAB would do it also.

A Berger VLD Hunting bullet will shoot paper well at 800 yards and drop a white tail in its tracks at 50 yards.

I've found the Hornady 165 SST very accurate and it exited the only whitetail buck I've shot with it, but that was at 100 yards with my '06.

You may want to look at 155 scenars, there are a couple of guys here who swear by them.

.....Concur with the Berger VLDs. But why the need for an exit hole as long as you quickly and effectively drop your game either being DRT or running a few yards after the shot? That`s not to say that the VLDs won`t exit a 200 lb whitetails, because many have.

I have 53 "hunting" 30 caliber VLD kills so far, 52 hogs and one bull elk; all one shot kills. I don`t care about exit holes, bullet weight retentions nor bullet recoveries. What`s the point of that? I`m only concerned with the quickest and most effective kills possible, with as little to no tracking after the shot as possible.

Impacted with well placed shots, none of my kills have scampered beyond 10-15 yards after being internally devastated with the VLD.

I've seen enough evidence to believe the Scenars and VLD are a good choice. For a traditional hunting bullet, the 165 Accubond sure shoots well in my 308.

OP asked for bullet to exit at 50 yards given we do not know for sure which 308 cal. cartiage he is talking about (maybe a .300 super mag ? ) i would go with barnes 168 or a good bonded style bullet if juat a 308 than most likely a most bullets would exit at 50 yards

Hornady lists their AMax for medium game. Maybe their 155 or 168?

Good suggestions above. I'm looking forward to trying both the 175 and 200gr LRX's in the 30-06 and 300WSM. I called to get the BC's once. I can't remember exactly what they were, but I'm pretty sure they were in the 400's.

Does anyone have that data? Barnes closes at noon on Friday's.

My only concern would be at shorter distances, these heavy for caliber (mono-metal's) bullets may pin hole your deer. I personally wouldn't use them on our White Tails. Elk? Definitely!!

I just looked at the Midway site where they normally provide that info and it looks like it isn't available yet.

The 180 gr ETip is .523 but the 168 NBT is .490. I like the latter quite a lot myself...
