Has anyone ever used a brand of bullet, like Barnes, not to shoot well w/ one particuliar weight, but go down a size and shoots better.
For instance going from 168gr down to 150gr?

Yes, many different calibers too. Barrels can be fussy eaters at times.

Absolutely a common occurrence. Amazing how a variation in 10% bullet weight can change grouping in a rifle.

I've seen the opposite. I have a Savage LRPV in 6BR that will shoot 0.150" groups at 100 meters with Berger 68 grain Target bullets. But, when I shoot Berger 62 grain Target bullets the groups are 1.5-2.0" at 100 meters, or 10 times the size. Changed seating depths all over the place from jam to huge jumps, velocities from 3000 to 3600, and powder type, but still the same. Gun just does not like the 62 grain Bergers. I suspect they are too short for the throat in the gun.

Absolutely. The 185 TTSX is the best shooting in my rifle and the 210 TTSX the worst. There are about about 5 in between those two that I have tried so far.

Well, same brand but different weights, etc, are not the same bullet. Few, if any, rifles do as well with various bullets no matter the brand.

Yep. Sometimes it's the length of the bearing surface, not the weight, that's causing the difference. I have one rifle that really likes short bearing surface bullets, so if I want to shoot heavier bullets I have to look for ones with short shanks and lots of ogive.

Sometimes you can get the bullet you want by using a different powder.

It worked for me in my 338WM BAR

Now Im a believer

I once owned a Ruger 77MKII in 7mm Rem Mag that wouldn't shoot my favorite .284 bullet(160gr Nosler Partition) to my satisfaction no matter what powder I tried. Decided to try the 150gr Partition on a whim and low and behold, sub-moa for three shots at 100yds from the very start!

Rifles do the strangest things.

yep,

About the BAR i spoke about before...

I was ready to sell it.

I was lamenting about how poorly it shot compared to the same load in my bolt gun.

Someone on this very forum said Try a different powder

So I did and it worked

I just am not as smart as I think I am.

Seems almost every time I pick someones pet load, it doesnt work well in my gun.

Also seemed to notice many people run 55 grain V-Max or BT in their .22-250s but run 50 grainers in the .220 swift. I use IMR 4064 and 55 grain Ballistic tips in the .22-250 but that combo was a 2" group in my swift. Going to try 50 grain bullets.
