I think the Partition will open the most before it sheds the front, the X will retain the most weight and penetrate the deepest, not sure how you will measure wound channel, if diameter by length then I'll go with the Partition again.
Please don't take my earlier comments personally, I just really haven't been enamored by the bonded bullets from the get go. If all we ever had were cup and core bullets then I think the bonded bullets would be the cat's meow, but with partitions and monometals available I believe they are still better bullets.
I too can't wait to read/see the results! You've piqued my interest as to the type of "test" material.

Please don't take my earlier comments personally No problem. If I took comments personally I would have given up long ago. I could have just done the testing, put the article together and let it run in print in a magazine without solicitation of input. But, the discussion on the AccuBond thread is what prompted Rick to ask for the test. I felt it only appropriate to try to incorporate some ideas or suggestions from Campfire members into the investigation. After all, there is no place else where readers have this much influence in article content.

Whitetail,
I have been taking my Steyr Scout in .308 Win hunting in Africa and North America as my all-around rifle. I now use a low-power variable mounted in conventional position on this rifle. Right now the scope is a Leupold VXIII 1.5-6X, but I change the scope frequently for testing in the field.
Generally I shoot factory ammunition on my hunts to collect data on performance. I did three leopard hunts before finally scoring, so I got to shoot a lot of leopard bait as well as other animals.
So for .308"/180s I used Speer Nitrex with Grand Slam bullet, Winchester FailSafe, Norma Oryx bonded bullet, and also Federal with 165 gr Trophy Bonded soft point.
I have only recovered one FailSafe, that was a Texas heart shot on a fleeing mountain reedbuck (of all things as they are not large). That bullet penetrated a lot of meat and bone and was caught under the hide and weighs 180.1 grains.

1. The Barnes and Failsafe will penetrate the deepest, the winner will probably be determined by which sheds its petals the most
2. The bonded bullets will open the largest wound channel, but probably will not penetrate much more than an Interlock would, if the velocities are kept in the 308 range
3. The Partition will give the best balance of penetration and expansion i.e. wound channel

Whitetail, I understand about the time issue. Seems like I don't have enough time for myself. Elk season is only 3 months away!
If I lived closer, I'd love to come and help you with some of the grunt work.
It's your test. Do it the way you want. I can't wait to see the results. It sounds like you have a different strategy in mind from some of the other bullet tests. That will make it even more interesting. Be sure to let us know where it is published. If some editor refuses to publish, let us know. We'll ruin his day.

Richard, I will be very interested in not only reading your test, but also the commentary that will appear here following it. My interest is in how well the "blogosphere" adds value to an original work in our favorite subject matter (shooting and hunting). Rick, Thank you for sponsoring this work. jim

Here is a test of several 30 cal. 180 gr. bullets at various velocities. (308 win - 300 wm) I would guess that your results will be similar. Still, it will be interesting to see your results........... Give some round nose bullets a try also. http://www.seahook.com/bestbullet.jpg(click on the arrows on the lower right corner to enlarge)

"What I want is predictions on which will penetrate the deepest, retain the most weight, create the largest wound channel and open the most."
Penetration: FailSafe, Barnes, Part. Weight: Barnes, F/S, Partition Wound Channel: Part., FailSafe, Barnes Opening: I/Bond & the like (cup/core) Partition, F/S, Barnes.
[color:"blue"] Likewise, I thank Mr. Bin for the sponsorship of this event ! I hope it all comes together in a fine fashion!!! [/color]

Pat,
Spent most of last week getting the details sorted out. If all works as planned there will be a uniqe surprise.
No use calling my SAC. Have already been told crime dose not take a backseat to gunwriting.
I have managed to secure a couple hands to pull this off. My five year old loves bullet testing. Recently did some handgun bullet tests in water...He was the retriever.

I honestly think you need to include all of the newer bonded bullets, ie, include the Swift Scirocco. Some don't like it's expansion and large mushroom, but there is also a group that does like that, especially for deer sized game.

Sorry, I beg to differ re wound channels. Compare the expanded areas of the Woodleigh 165gn and 200gn next to the Nosler 180gn Partition. The Speer 165gn SPBT and Remington 180gn PSPCL did not have the same penetration as the Woodleighs and Nosler (obviously).
