Gotta make a decision of what scope to buy for that Super Grade Model 70 I posted about here a while back. Finally got that big sucker off layaway, it's mine now! Anyway, here's the thoughts: I have a Kimber .22, with a Leupold VariX III 2.5-8x 36mm on it. I'm thinking of a couple of options. BUY a Weaver RV9 3-9x32mm AO scope for the Kimber, and move the 2.5-8x Leupold onto the M-70. OR leave the VariX III on the Kimber, and buy either a Leupold VX II 2-7x 33mm, Leupold VX II 3-9x 40mm, OR a Leupold FXII 6x36mm fixed. It'll cost about $220 to put the 3-9x AO Weaver on the rimfire rifle, OR right at $300 to put one of the mentioned scopes on the centerfire. One last option, and I'm hesitant on this one, simply because of the Burris problems brought up here and other boards, I could get a Burris Fullfield II 3-9x 40mm for right at $200 shipped. I know that Mr. John Barseness has tested with good results and personally uses some Burris Fullfield II's and even a compact Burris, with guys like Sitka and Stick being the anti Burris.

Will the 2.5-8x VariX III fit the .300 mag Model 70 without getting into extension rings or bases? How does the new Weaver RV9 3-9x 32mm with AO rate? OR would I be better off to leave the 2.5-8x on the Kimber .22 and just buy another scope for the M-70?? Hmm, decisions decisions, decisions! And can Mr. Rick sell me a new Leupold for a reasonable price getting away from Big L's rotten price fixing BS?? Got to do something before hunting season rolls around! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />

Phillip,
I've never had the "wants" for a .300Winny until I used my P.H.'s Mauser-actioned .300 in Africa. Using 200gr. Partitions, it killed everything. The scope was a 30MM 1.5-6 but I never took it off 6X at the P.H.'s suggestion. It was perfect for every shot from 40 yards to over 300, running or standing. So, when I got back to the States, and ran up on a great deal on a Model 70 in .300WM, I grabbed it and Premier is sending a Leu 6X42 with a 4a reticle. You could do a lot worse than this combo. RS

I had a Vari-XIII 2.5-8x36 on my 300wm Super grade. It now resides on my 1953 model 70 30-06. So yes, it will fit with normal Leupold/Redfield style rings. Myself personally likes a little higher power scope on such a rifle. 3-9 minimum, 4.5-14 maximum. If you decide to go with a fixed power, the 6x42 FXIII is the ticket over the 6x36 IMHO--2MG

I've got a Win. 70 classic in 338 mag. and have a Leupie 6x 42mm on it. Great scope for this rifle. That being said, I also have 6x 36mm loupies on 2 Ruger compacts. They don't work as well in low light but the difference is marginal.
The smaller objective looks better on the small rifles.

Phillip, I can second what 2muchgun said about the VariX III 2.5 x 8 x36. I've got a Win. Model 70 in 300 win mag with that same scope on it. Mine's mounted in Talley fixed steel rings and it looks and shoots great. I like your idea of swapping scopes with your Kimber, you'll have top end glass on the super grade and a real decent scope (quality and price wise) on the Kimber with the Weaver V9. Leftybolt
