I had a Custom KS in .300Wby Mag with a Vari X-III 2.5-8x36mm for a couple of years. Two buddies also owned the same gun with 3.5-10x40mm scopes. I also had a custom 700Ti in 7mm-08IMP with an M-8 6x42. Right now, all my 700LA's have 3.5-10x40mm except my Beanfield rifle which has 3.5-10x50mmAO.
I personally don't love the Ultralights or Compacts. They have less eye-relief, less adjustment, and have always looked less bright to me.
On a lightweight long action 700 the 3.5-10x40mm or 2.5-8x36mm looks good in a variable. On a short action I like 1.75-6x32mm. The 6x42mm looks good on any of them.

I have a short action 308 mountain rifle - one of my favorites - and it wears a 3-9X40 Nikon Monarch. All of my big game hunting rifles are equipped with scopes from 2.5-10X to 3.5-10X, in a 40mm objective size....

Tom

Since being a little kid looking at the Gun's annual, I always thought that THE caliber for a Mountain rifle is the 280, now I think it should be an AI

I have a custom .280, and recently mounted up a Leupold VX3 3.5-10 x 40 CDS. The turret system should really add to the longer-range capability of this rifle. It looks and feels like it belongs on the rifle. Weight of the rifle, with scope, rings, and sling, is 7.5# all up- perfect weight for me.

I have a mountain rifle in 7-08, it has a 3-9 Zeiss conquest on it that works good. Your 3.5-10 would be a good scope on that rifle. The part of the ultra-lights that I don't like is the smaller objective. I have always thought the 257 Roberts would be the perfect caliber for the mountain rifle.

Here's a Leupie VXII 3-9 on a Mountain rifle for a reference. Mounts a little higher than I'd like tho. This is an 06.

Don't own a 280 or a MR, but were I starting over, it would be a damn good place to start. Not much you could not hunt, with great confidence, with that rifle.

These guys may not have a golf cart and the weight of the .30-06 cartridges is probably too much for them. The .270 cartridges are lighter;)

I would like to pick up a couple of the LSS Mountain Rifles in .280 and '06 to fit a couple of Mickeys I ordered. Also like to get an original in .280 to leave unmolested. 3.5-10x40s or 6x42s on all of them.
This is a shooting forum, there is no place here for logic.

I have the 7-08, 280, 7x57, and 30-06. The 7-08 was my go-to for a long time...still may be if not for the same in Ti. I liked the old Vari-X II 2-7x32 from the time I got the Mtn rifles even tho the Ti model has the 2.5x8 VX-III. Like other things, they're all good, some just tighter than others g

I just picked up one in 280 Rem. And was wondering who else has a mountain rifle and what caliber you have and what scope you have I currently have a Leupold VX III 3.5-10x40mm that I had layin around but think I might put a Leupold ultralight on it Congrats on your new rifle! I've owned two, a 30-06 and a 7mm-08. Never could get the '06 to shoot right so it got a new, slightly heavier barrel but still lives in the excellent Mountain stock. I love how those stocks feel. The 7-08 shoots GREAT and has been a very easy rifle to work with. All I've done is lighten the trigger to 3 lbs or so. It's not even bedded or floated. Shoots sub-MOA out to 500 yards easy. The only scope I've run on mine have been Leup 2.5-8's. That's a good match for the rifle, as is the 3.5-10 you've got on it now. Can't speak to the Ultralights. Another one would be a Swaro Z3 or AV in the 3-10x42 size. For mounts the Talley Lightweights are a great match for the rifle: light, simple, strong, and cheap. My only beef with the MR is that the laminate versions, and to a lesser extent the wood-stocked ones, can be quite butt-heavy. The heavier barrel on my '06 made it balance perfectly, and on my 7-08 I hollowed out the butt of the laminate stock pretty aggressively, which really fixed the balance. Just a thought.
The CENTER will hold.
