I will be mounting up two scopes in the near future (as soon as I decide which rings), and one of my choices for a mounting system is the Talley LW setup. If I go this route, I've heard that a good way to minimize the amount of lapping required is to tighten the Talleys while they are being aligned via a slotted alignment bar. Well, I can't find one of these bars for sale, but I've got a machinist friend who said he could make me one.

I don't have access to my rifles right now, so I needed some measurements:

I figure milling two slots on both ends of the bar would allow the wrench to slide through the bar while the bar aligns the rings. if I know the distance from the outer screws on the long action, and the inner screws on the short action, I could add/subtract ~1/4" to those measurements to allow for tool access, and I should be able to use the bar for both guns.

Comments? Better ideas? Still may go Burris signature rings, but starting to give the Talley's a look.
