I am from california and can say that we have far worse problems that illegal aliens causing our budget shortfalls.

We have extreamly high business taxes and crazy rules for emplyers desigen to protect workers rights that make it difficult and expensive to stay in business without breaking any rules.

We have one of the most unfriendly business environments in the country. If you want to build anything or expand an alrady existing building you have to pay several agencies their bribe money. If you don't pay they take everything. The fish and game gets used to enforce the local "enviromentalists" tax just like a gangsters racket. Overall it is very corrupt and the money just goes into a politicians pocket.

California has more layers living in the state than all of the Erupean countrys combined because there are so many opportunities here for them to make money enforcing all these stupid and expensive laws.

One small example of how rotten the system is is California's roadways. We have some of the nicest weather in the country and California collects more money for road construction than any other state, yet we have some of the worst maintained roads in the country.

Where to start? Sheesh. California's problems are the perfect storm of the law of unintended consequences. 1986 immigration "reform," and the border crackdown really hurt. All of a sudden, the illegals who got amnesty could stay legally, and wanted their families here. So the guy who'd previously been a seasonal farmworker became a permanent fixture, and brough his family up, creating consumers of social services. The border crackdown meant that the guys who previously just came up seasonally, then went home to their families in Mexico, and lived well during the fall and winter, stopped because it was too expensive. They stayed, and brought their families up...

The GOP, historically a big force in California, decided that orthodoxy on social issues, and the Christian right, was more important than limited and responsible government. SO the Republicans succeeded in marginalizing themselves, defying the generally Libertarian streak in California conservatives (don't forget, Governor Reagan signed California's law allowing abortions in 1967, and publicly opposed anti-gay legislation supported by "religious right" in '78). As the GOP effectively became a marginal party, it gave the Dems virtually unfettered control (which doesn't necessarily lead to disaster.. look at Vermont. Its a great 2nd Amendment State, with a balanced budget).

But California's intiative process really got the debacle rolling. Anybody can get something onto the ballot. Special interests would run misleading propositions, all of which cost money. That locked in spending. Term limits created an amateur hour, where legislators wouldn't be accountable, and wouldn't want to jeopardize their chance in the next election to a new position, by taking an unpopular stand. The initiatives, and term limits, made the big public employee unions (the prison guards first, followed by the teachers) more powerful; somehow, thanks to CCPOA dollars, we ended up with 33 prisons in the state.

We've got a bizarre tax structure, dependent on high wage earners for income tax. So in dot.com era, when money was everywhere, as more and more spending got locked in, it set the stage for a disaster. Our property tax limitation keeps corporately-owned commercial property taxes artificially low. Despite surprising amounts of oil and gas, California has no extraction tax (even Texas has an extraction tax). Add in the loss of numerous bases (and those jobs) through realignment, the drastic rollback in the aerospace industry, and the same reduction in manufacturing jobs that almost every other state experienced, and the money isn't there to support all the locked-in spending.

So there's a basic structural deficit. It's huge (but there are states with larger deficits, when you view it asa percentage of their state budget). 75-80% of spending is now locked in by initiative, and the legislature can't do anything about it, even if they had the guts.

Absent an economic miracle, or a state constitutional convention, it won't turn around anytime soon. There won't be a collapse, but it'll be damned uncomfortable.

I was mostly educated by the good nuns of the sisters of carondolet. Sacred Heart school in prescott, by nuns wearing the habit. When i transfered into the public school system for a while, that is until my mother figured out i was running wild, I basically didn't have to do much. Those nuns were very good educators. And, we didn't have school buses, and all the foo foo.
They also didn't have huge amounts of administrative people either. The big problem with calif. is the bridges accross the colorado make it easy for the wingnuts to come over here.
I think spanos should contribute a little more of his millions to help out his state.

You could lay off about a third of the cops too...and be better off. I've said that since I was a rookie. The problem is that in government, it won't be the correct ones that get fired. All entitlement positions will be retained.

they had a article in the local paper today about the phoenix P.D. Seems with the reduction in crime etc that they have a lot of certified people with not enough to do. The solution of course is to cause reduction in ranks by attrition, and have them work a five day eight hour workweek, instead of four days, ten hours. The work layoff was mentioned, we would never think of doing that.

It took three years and the approval of half a dozen state and federal agencies to get a private gravel road built across my property. This property is off grid and far from civilization.

I haven't added up the cost of all the permits, surveys, fees and taxes, legal fees, consultants fees but it was well over 10k and that was before the excavator took its first bite.

The people who suffer the most from the flood of illegal aliens are the poor. They have to compete for the same jobs as the illegals and the illegals are willing to work for peanuts. The construction industry in Calif has been taken over by illegals because the can under bit those that hire US citizens. The poor also suffers because the resources that would go to help them have to be spread out to help the huge numbers of illegals also. This points out the hypocrasy of the progressives who pretend to be concerned about our poor citizens but encourage the huge flood of illegals that hurt them. There would be no progressives if there were no poor people so the progressives work constantly to create new poor people.

One would think that IF Kalifornia was SO DAMN GREAT....that THEY would be the LEADER in the nation; have tons of $$$$$$ saved up and a fantastic infrastructure! Instead...the sonofabitch is literally TONS of $$$$$$ in debt....100' over their heads and the infrastructure of the state is in total decline!!

So much for the GREATNESS of Kalifornia!!

So let's see,...

Many states are running deficits and are being forced to cut back on personnel and services.

The Federal Government has the same problem and can't continue to paper it over with new money without running the risk of totally crashing our currency,..so it's going to let the states fend for themselves, financially.

Meanwhile, the federal government will continue to pull vast sums of money from the states in order to fund itself.

It the old days, that was known as taxation without representation.

An informed population would be calling for nullification by now, but it'll probably take another 10 years or so.

You would think, but that same populace is still believing the lies that paper money holds value and .gov is the source of everything good, while their fuel, food, medicine and other prices climb through the roof. But hey, the stock market is on the rebound, so they have that going for them.

It's going to be very ugly when reality hits them.

Try this one, Sam.

In Tangipahoa Parish, La., there is a standing suit by the NAACP about public schools there, all in dire need of repair + desired raises for employees. A tax election is soon to be called to address this. Along racial lines, whites are 100% nay (already paying for the necessary private schools) with you know the other piece.

A Federal Judge has clearly stated upfront that IF the tax initiative failed in the election, he would - mandate - the proposed tax be invoked. It has an apparent precedent. Easy to predict that this wont be the last and it wont be restricted to La. alone.

Ya love it, or what?

The bailout has long been in progress. According to Bloomberg, 40% of their bonds are bought by you and me, aka fed gov't.

Agree 100%. They dug their hole with idiotic policies that everyone knew were unsustainable, let Cali sink.

Same goes for the fed. Why the States, or more important the people, let gov at any level drag them down the tubes is beyond me.

Let it all sink. It's all a fictional economy to begin with anyway, so who cares. The real economy will emerge. In fact it has been for a long time. Once the fictional one is out of the way it'll grow like wildfire. Course, a lot of loafers and free loaders, both non gov and those in gov or retired gov positions, will have to either starve or become productive. I'm sure both options are totally foreign to them but they'll learn.
