it just might be my own bias, but somehow i think Kate might make a better Queen than William would make a King. but, William is the bet, so that's the direction to run.

his daddy might be King for ages, before William even has a chance.

Prince Harry, now there's King material. wink

I love those hats!

Every few years the Anti's try to get the MOD to go with a synthetic alternative...Up to now, the Royal's have always vetoed the change.

Actually, the No1 Uniform of many British Regiments has a Bearskin as a cover, but usually of a smaller style than the Guards..

Not sure what you mean?? When things get to that point Kate will be crowned Queen alongside William as King...

Pete;

Do not try logic and understanding with Gus. You've not the right chemicals to induce that "awareness".

interesting for sure. what is the tradition related to the bearskins? was it something imported from Jewmany, long years ago? we Americans can relate to the frontier with coon-skin caps, ala Daniel Boone.

seems like the French adore horse-tails??

anyways, educate us. inquiring minds want to know. grin

I certainly hope many of you give this young couple a BREAK !! They are both total class IMO and will bring some respect back to the royal family for a change.I've had the privilege to serve around the RAF and get to know some of these fine chaps..if and when the schitt evers hits the fan these guys and most all Brits still are our best friends across the pond!! This is a very important part of their national heritage, if you can't comprehend that then don't critize !!!

Not surprised that LyinAssWalt wouldn't understand the importance and significance of a strong King in England again. And, in two years, William will be King.

The FACT that he serves with distinction, and has set the groundwork for incorporating the Irish and Scots more fully into the UK, as well as the FACT that he will be far more powerful and involved that any monarch since the WWII era is a good thing. The power of parliament and the PM will diminish with William on the throne....

When Europe may need a strong England again very badly, this is a good thing.

it's always good to have an opportunity to learn from those who know. grin

the thought was that while the English love the K & Q bizness, the French to put lot's of emphasis on the value of horse-tails as a part of their military regimen?

in the Yiddish Dov equates to Bear, does it not? so, bearskins bear a long history in the development of the civilized world. can you imagine living in a cold forest in the winter, without bearskin coverings?

meanwhile, back to the subject, it is good to get educated about the gig of King and Queen.

it's good work if ya can get it. the Tradition lives on. may they all have happy lives, and may the taxpayers be happy also. grin

Miss Jenkins is of course a big name singer now..The young lady below is a girl from a nearby town singing the Welsh National Anthem at my local football ground before some match:

Very credible performance and yes the Wales is justifiably famous for its singers..

Bearskin hats of one sort or another were common in many British and European Armies.

In the British Army, the Grenadier Guards were the first to wear a bearskin as a battle honor after beating the Grenadiers of the French Imperial Guard at the Battle of Waterloo.

Tradionally, fur from black bears are used for the bearskins of "Other Ranks" while Officer Bearskins were made from the fur of brown bears which was dyed black for use..

Re the coon skin hats, the Royal Regiment of Fusilers wear what is termed a "sealskin" hat, but it is apparently made from raccoon skin..

Not sure of the history behind it, but as the regiment served in America during the Revolution, it could well date fom that period....

thanks, Pete. that is informative.

so, just how much "value-added" does the King & Queen business add to the English economy??

we know it's probably heavily subsidized, but what are the benefits, exactly??

Not seen the figures, but these days the Royal Family voluntarily pay tax on their private incomes the same as the rest of us so they are "taxpayers" too..

As to the income they bring in, its hard to quantify and also how do you put a figure on the "goodwill" worth around the world?

Cost wise, not everything is picked up by the taxpayer..For instance, the Royals have private residences such as Sandringham and Balmoral which they found themselves, as opposed to "offical" buildings like Buckingham Palace.

Another example is Charles, who doesn't draw any money from the Civil List as his income comes entirely from his Estate..

All in all, these days, I think the senior Royals are pretty good value for the money for the country..

the Czah of Russia, what a lost cause that was. grin

I don't think the Royals cost the country anything. Most of the property associated with them belongs to, and is maintained by the the Crown Estate which is worth about 7 billion pounds (about 12 billion dollars) and includes property you'd think was out side of the United Kingdom within the Commonwealth. Elizabeth II as the reigning Queen is therefore the Head of State for that "corporation". They are paying taxes on their personal wealth to placate the commoners, to maintain approval ratings. Elizabeth II is worth about 350 million.

Here, here...!

My fave right before "the kiss" on the balcony at Buckingham Palace, overhead roared a WWII era Lancaster bomber and escort. To think just a few decades ago the country, including a few people present on that balcony, was nearly lost to Hitler's war machine. I wonder what memories the sound of those vintage planes inspires in the minds of the elders.

Good show...! God save the Queen...!

i am glad that Britain was part of the group that won WWII. as was the French, Russia, and America, along with Canada and Australia, etc. etc.

America seems to have done quite well without a King an Queen. so has Russia once the Czar was done away with.

i like good, positive PR. but, how does a Queen become worth 350 million dollars? did she fight someone for it?

it is good to know that once upon a time the Sun never set on the British Empire. now that the US empire is in decline, i wonder what will happen next to the British Royals? should they secede, and become aristocrats, or really jump, and become commoners??
