Anyone have an opinion? Looking for a scope in this power range for my Ruger 77/17. I like the idea of the side focus but the Nikon only focuses down to 50 yds and was wondering how accurately it will focus at that range. I had a Burris FFII AO and it would not focus at this range clearly.

I have used several of the 4.5-14 and I really like them especially with the mil-dot reticle.
On mine the side focus works very well at all distances.

Just used my el-cheapo buckmaster (4.5-14x40) today at a shoot and walked away with the money . They are damn good scopes for the money. I've never had a focusing problem or any other kind of problem with mine for that matter. I think you'd be pretty happy with it. Oh by the way, I put the same scope on my 22 mag just for chits and giggles and it focused very well at 50 yds. I was shooting this target from snipershide and still able to see the numbers pretty good:
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

I have a buckmaster 4.5-14. of coarse if your on high power it won't focus completely at 50 yards, but it gets damn close. just go down in power a little and it will easily focus at 50 yards. actually on 4 power it focuses crystal clear down to about 30 yards or maybe less. This is actually one of the easiest focusing scopes I've ever owned.

I use a Buckmaster 4.5-14x40 with side focus. I like it a lot. The side focus is convenient and I have no problems focusing at 50. The image is bright and the clarity from edge to edge is very nice. I had a good experience with Nikon Sport Optics customer support for an older binocular too. Brian

I have a buckmaster on my 17 fireball. I love that scope. I am working on replacing all the scopes in my fleet with them. I am adding a 6-18 to the 257 weatherby mag next. I guess I will try one of the monarch line for the swift since I want something with more than 18 magnification. Any opinions on the Monarchs? I think I will get another 4.5-14 for the 270 win.

I have a couple of Buckmaster 4.5-14's with side focus and the mil dot mounted on .22 40-x's and they'll focus down to 50 yds no problem. I have another on a .221 Fireball/laminated and with that scope has shot a 100 yd, ten shot group of about 0.49" as best as I can measure. Good clarity an brightness too and I like the side focus. I'd buy another. __________ NRA Life,Endowment,Patron or Benefactor since '72.
