Most of the ice on the lower river here moved with the Spring tides on the 4th or 5th.

Don't think there's a winner in Nenana yet.

Is the water getting soft? Yes, but only in a few spots, and starting to move some, however, the ice is hardly "out" yet on May 1st....

But, the flowers are blooming...

(Looks like it'll be a bumper year for cotton grass!)

And the "trees", all 4 inches of them, are heading into full blossom...

Fished willow yesterday. Anything north of there won't be ice free for a week or 2.

The ice still hasn't floated here. A couple holes showing up in the usual places. 22" inches of snow still on the ground. High of 43f yesterday.

Careful what you say, or some folks might think the laws of physics are different in AK. wink I'm not sure if you really meant that considering your location, but I will point out that on the ponds and smaller lakes out around the mouth of the Big River, we see ice-out occur twice. The first time has happened already. That's when the snow on the surrounding land melts and floods the ponds so there is a foot or two of water in them, on top of the winter ice. The second ice-out happens when the ice which was originally there and melting finally releases its grip on the bottom (since it mostly freezes all the way through) and floats. Then it has to finish melting at the surface.

The ice was out on the South Fork of the Kuskokwim in front of Nikolai last week, but has not run at McGrath yet. The lake I am on here on the Kenai still has a lot of ice.

Thanks for clarifying my meaning. smile I didn't really think about it when I wrote it, but it does sound a little strange in retrospect. There is still lots of water on the ice here. It hasn't lifted and drained yet. Should be pretty soon though.

I guess pretty soon meant today. It's looking pretty high and dry now and there is a little current in the lead along the edge.

Noatak is still solid. Made a 32 mile (one way) run day before yesterday with a sled load of building supplies for a friend. A little run-off in spots, but not more than a couple inches deep. Probably frozen solid again by now, as the temps dropped below freezing for a few of the next days.

The geese and swans are back tho.....

Rained all the way from Anchorage to Sterling tonight. Kind of a novelty!

What a bummer for me. I was looking forward to being a one man economic stimulus package for the sporting goods industry.
