I've seen a lot of posts comparing one brand of scope to another, but I've not seen any comparing the Nikon Monarch 2-8X32 vs a Vortex Viper 2-7X32. I have a couple of the Nikon 2-8 and I like them, but I'm in the market for another scope and was looking at the Vortex Viper 2-7. Any suggestions would help.

I have a couple o' the Vortexes (Vortices?), and the precursor to the Nikon 2-8: it's a Monarch UCC 2-7. I prefer the Vortex due to image quality, amount of eye relief, having constant eye relief across magnifications, and the magnification "lever" design.
It's my understanding that the newer Monarch 2-8 has constant eye relief, and I'd guess they upgraded the glass, too. As always, look through both if you're able to.
With the Vortex going for $149 right now, I'd very likely swing that way.

Thanks FC that helps. I like the 2-8 Nikon, but the $149 Viper is very tempting if the quality is close to the same.

...just be aware that the field of view isn't the greatest in the Vortex 2-7. I like everything else about the scope...but looking at the reticle surrounded by an "inner tube" drives me nuts.
I eventually want to replace mine with the new Bushnell Elite 2-7.

Dan That's a good point. What new Bushnell Elite 2-7? The 3200?

Per SWFA, the listed FOV for the 2-7x32 Viper is from 13.4' to 46.7' Per SWFA, the listed FOV for the 2-8x32 Monarch is from 11.5' to 46.2' Can`t see how a Viper could lack in the FOV dept vs the Monarch. As long as there are great discounts on the Viper now, the Monarch is not worth nearly twice the price. Between these two and if given the same choice, I`d certainly go the Viper. There would be no advantages in the field that one would have over the other.

Vortex is certainly looking better to me and like bigsqueeze pointed out.......the Nikon is not worth it at twice the price. That's a very good point.

Since the Minox 3-9x40 is around the same price as the Nikon (the open box one at Cameraland) should that it by considered also?

Dan That's a good point. What new Bushnell Elite 2-7? The 3200? All new Elites are simply called "Elite" as the 3200 has been discontinued. The remaining are equal to the old 4200's with an additional Ultra Wide Band coating and the 6.5x magnification series in the 6500's. My new Monach 2-8 still has the "inner tube" look around the reticle and the diameter of the eyepiece is rather large. It's a nice scope, but I'm not sure it's any better or different than the previous offerings.

At 149 dollars you cannot beat the Vortex Viper 2-7x32mm scope. You get a fine optic with one of the best warranty's in the business that should last a lifetime and to top it off at a price point where most other scopes are made in China, but comes from the Philippines. You could spend that much money taking your family out for a special dinner or buddies out on the town easy.

I'm convinced. Boy, Vortex has a really good following here. A Viper it will be.
