Require or simply be smart and/or experienced enough to realize the advantages?

THere have been many, many times I've returned to the truck or vehice in the evening wishing I had a lighter rifle.

Last fall I finally got smart and invited two nephews to antelope hunt in Wyoming, both from out of state (OK and SC) and neither with their own rifles. No need for me to carry a rifle and much of the time I didn't. It was great and when I needed a rifle all I had to do was ask. Now if I could just figure a way to get a gun bearer on an elk hunt...

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

Just checked the weight on my favorite old Win M70 30-06 with an accurate digital scale and with the current scope, mount and sling it comes in at 8 pounds 12 ounces.

The weight feels about right to me; not too heavy and not too light. I like rifles with a little weight to them, and with a good sling installed lugging one around for hours on end is no big deal.
