Shooting deer at 500 yards what do you think is the best bullet for the .308 win 168 grain or 175.If you dont mind tell me what brand of bullet also.

Well first of all I've never heard of a 175 grain bullet in 30 caliber. The closest to that would be 180 grain, which is a good long range bullet, but in a 308 it's a little heavy. I think a 165 grain boattail would be the best if you're really wanting to shoot out to 500 yards. Try either a Nosler Ballistic Tip or Sierra Game Kings.

The Barnes 165 triple shock has one of the best available BC's for a hunting bullet (.505). If you get it to 2800 fps, you will have about 2000 fps left at 500 yards, and 1400+ foot pounds of energy. That should be fast enough to expand the X and get-r-done. Practice makes perfect too.........YMMV.

Of course the argument for the sierra or ballistic tip can be made. At reduced velocity those bullets should expand more. But their BC will slow them even more. Catch 22 ??

Actually, if you went with a Barnes you could go as light as a 150 and still have a decent ballistic coefficient (I think.) But I still think for 500 yard shots your velocity will be low enough that a softer bullet would be more reliable.

Sierra and Berger make 175s. They're match bullets though.

I would just go with 165grain remington core-lokts if there accurate in your gun because they will need to be 500 yards is alot farther then most people think. These would be cheap enough to practice with alot which you will need to do and soft enough to expand going slow.

7 grains of bullet makes NO difference what so ever between the two. I would stick with 165 grain Ballistic tips or Hornadys in the .308. They work SUPERB at long and close range at .308 ballistics. Flinch
