Just got one of the Chapparral 1876's in 40-60, I understand that brass can be made from 45-70, can I just trim and run through a 40-60 sizing die or do I need a specific reducing die for this operation? From what I can find, only Ten-X is making loaded ammo, but it runs about $4.00 per round. Anyone know of other sources for ammo?

Ive made many 40-65 cases with a single pass of a well lubed 45-70 case thru a 40-65 sizing die. Trim after sizing. CARTRIDGES OF THE WORLD says the 40-60 can be easily be made from the 45-70 so I'm thinking one pass thru the 45-70 die and a trim should do it.
Dennis.
Those who call magazines "clips" and cartridges "bullets" ought not to be taken seriously. Jeff Cooper. We might add those who call bullets "boolits.

Be my guess Dennis B is on the money. I make 40-70 BN with one pass thru the sizer as long as I use Imperial die sizing wax on the case. Magnum Man

I've never messed with a .38, but I've formed a lot of .40-65 from .45-70 brass. I learned that not all brands work the same. Starline is great brass, but it's best to anneal it before forming. I really like Imperial for most sizing, but for case forming I've had better luck with pure anhydrous lanolin.

Paul +1 I've formed some 40-65 brass from 45-70, mostly starline. Annealing before hand seems to help a lot.
