I found a reasonably priced older 700 but need to know if the action can be changed to the newer type that doesn't make you put the safety in the fire position to unload the rifle. Thanx.

There are a bunch of guys out there who want that type of safety. You can either get someone to sway levers with you or just cut the extension off the one you have.

Well, with the sheer number of folks who do not properly maintain the "Walker" triggers on their rifles, it could become sticky from years of oils, dirt and neglect causing the floating connector to fail to rest beneath the sear safety cam if the trigger is unconsciously pulled while the safety is engaged. Having to remove the safety in order to open the bolt to unload the rifle such a scenario could result in the rifle firing upon moving the safety, so, removing the bolt lock feature would make it less likely to occur.

It is a relatively simple matter to remove that feature on the older "Walker" triggers and any competent gunsmith should be able to do that, and service the trigger, for less money than a quality replacement trigger.

I wish all my 700s had the older type that keeps the bolt closed when the safety is on.

I will not have a gun that needs to be put on fire to unload. The only time I put my gun on fire is too kill something. Thanx for the replies and have a safe weekend guys.

I have a box of old 700 safeties with the lock feature which I will gladly sell you a few.

When I originally spoke with a local fella with the Rem 700 22-250 for sale I mentioned that I didn't want the model that locked the bolt on safe. He asked why and I told him I don't like putting the gun in fire position to unload as the gun could fire. He literally replied, "Oh yea, my 30'06 does that if I touch the trigger while loaded on safe then put to fire position, the gun fires." YIKES I said maybe someone messed with the trigger or the mechanism was dirty. Nope brand new, years ago, untouched from the factory, he said. Who knows? He said, she said, whatever. I'll take the newer triggers.

All guns will fire when you touch the trigger.

All guns will fire when you touch the trigger.

While the rifle is on safe?

Another reason the 700 is "superior" to the M70 and 77.

All guns will fire when you put your finger on the trigger and put the safety in the fire position. The Model 70s and M77s might be ok if they were accurate but they aren't. Only accurate rifles are interesting, and that's why I shoot Remingtons.

If you want a hunting rifle get a Model 70 and if you want accuracy then get a 700.

There is a recall on these triggers. Contact Remington to confirm you rifle is included in the recall. If included you can take the rifle to an authorized Remington repair center and the trigger will be changed to one which allows the bolt to be opened while the safety is in Safe. The cost is around $20 but you get a cetificate for some over priced BS. It's a PIA to have to take the rifle in and the go pick up later.

Simple terms of the accidental discharge again. Load round, put rifle on safe, point in safe direction at the shooting range, pull trigger while on safe and feel a "click", release finger from trigger guard, move safety to fire and gun fires. His story not mine, again he said she said and gun was brand new untouched. He was not pulling the trigger while putting the safe on fire. Some gun there, eh.

He was at the shooting range with his new 700 and a friend showed him how the gun could fire on moving the safety. His buddie's 700 had done the same thing and it was a well known problem. He said he was lucky someone warned him of the problem with the Rem 700 before he found out in a bad way. Why would he lie to me, he was trying to sell me a Rem 700 in 22-250 with the same shxt trigger/safety. I know guys that grew up in upstate NY and either worked for or had friends that worked at the Rem factory. They did not carry Remingtons hunting.

i've seen enough fail that test that i'm in the same camp as Dusty. i want a safety that will allow me to clear a hot chamber on 'SAFE'.
