It appears that the 454 Casull is maximized by using jacked bullets...am I correct? I have some 265g Hard Cast GC bullets, is this safe to load? I found one load saying 7.0g - 9.0g of Trail Boss. Any other options?

I'll load what 265s I have and get some other bullets for some more serious business. I think I'll look into getting the FA JFP bullets.

With either the .454 or even .45lc I go with the biggest metplat available. I use the same bullet at about 1200fps with 20gr of lil'gun and it does everything I need it to do. I was told it will run about 1500fps out of my 20" rifle but have yet to put it over the chrono.

Cast Performance I thought these would be pretty decent...but nobody has a load faster then 1000 fps. And I have run accross several sources that says to not run them faster than that. That is why the initial question.

Not so. Start with the 335 gr WLNGC and work up in boolit weight. You can shoot them at the full velocity that you can get from the .454. Who is saying 1000 fps?

Tlfw, I have pushed them to 1500fps with lil'gun and they were great. I have reamed my cylinder to match the throat as well as fire lapped the barrel but I had no leading after 50 rounds.
I have since backed down to about 1200fps since that will still penetrate over 2feet of pig. The jump from 1200fps to 1500fps was a substantial change in recoil, very brisk snap and was worse than 320s at 1100fps.

Tlfw, Just talked to my buddy with a Casull and confirmed he is using H110 to get 1800fps with this same bullet with no leading issues.

270 gr. Thunderheads from Penn Bullets have about the biggest metplat I've seen for the .45 Colt. I shoot them in my old model Ruger 3 screw SBH, line bored by Jim Stroh at Alpha Precision in GA from .44 Rem Mag to .45 colt and fitted with a 6" Shilen barrel. I tuned the trigger to 3# and facilitated a trigger stop. Jim fit the long steel ejector housing and made the front sight, I made and checkered the grips. I use a max charge of 4227. I use the same powder with 300 gr. JHP and casts bullets in my .45 Colt Marlin Cowboy with 26" bbl. Target: Thunderheads at 20 yds. over a bag. Big meplat, big hammer... DF

Exactly why I don't shoot a 454 or 460.
Why buy a Casull to run 45 Colt velocities? Because you can shoot 300 grain bullets at 1300 fps(very low recoil) one handed and load heavy for over 1700 fps(300 grains)..I load my 360 grain cast at 1300 fps out of my Casull. Jayco

A full throttle .454 is a considerable jump ahead of a full throttle .45 Colt.
The latter can do most of what I'm asking one to do, with me trying to preserve what hearing I have left...

Theres no flies on a good 45 Colt but it isn't a 454 Casull and with that you get the recoil and fireball it produces..One thing for sure, there sure fun to shoot with full throttle loads, as is the BFR in 45-70....
Like an attitude adjustment!!!

If a full throttle .45 Colt won't do the job, I'm reaching for my .300 Win Mag, or if that's not enough, my .375 H&H...
Nothing against the hyper mags, they're just not for me...
I have friends that hunt with .454's, .460's, etc. And they do put meat in the freezer.
Different strokes...

I here 'ya on different strokes..My favorite Big Bore pistol is my BFR in 45-70 and it throws 525 cast(under 35K) at 1300 fps and 300 grain Noslers at 2K fps with ease and under Max load.... Gotta love the Big Bore pistols..... This is what I use in my 454 Casull for cast!!!! 45 Colt/454 Casull 360 gr.WFNGC - 0.858 OAL, 0.380 Crimp to Nose, 0.370 Meplat Jayco

Those hogs are nasty critters and are tearing up the country. Always gives me great pleasure to drop a hammer on one. Even greater pleasure on more than one...
The ones we're killing are fat and eat good. Freezer is where they belong...
