I've just picked up one in 300 savage serial#5974xx.It has the brass counter and is a "c" I beleive.Could anyone give me an age and approximate worth. It's in good shape with some minor marks in the wood.I think I'm becoming a levergun addict,I now own this one,a bl-22 and a 94 and I'm looking to add to the collection.

I agree with Jed... a Lever Boss Code of "C" would indicate a rifle manufactured in 1951.

In 1949, Savage began stamping a tiny, lightly impressed oval on the lower, front side of the "lever boss". Inside the oval, Savage stamped the letter "A" together with other numbers which are the inspectors numbers.

The lever boss is the extension of the lower, front part of the receiver into which the lever fits and rotates.

In 1950, the letter "B" was stamped inside the oval. In 1951, the letter "C" was stamped inside the oval, etc., etc. The "Lever Boss Code" looks could look like this & is inside the oval: 12C

It this case, the "12" is the inspector's number and the "C" indicates the rifle was inspected (and probably made) in 1951.

On many Model 99 rifles, this oval is indistinct or difficult to read as are the letters and inspectors numbers inside the oval. On my own late model EG, serial #709XXX, made in 1953, only the upper case letter E and the rear half of the ovals circumference (which looks like a large, faint, backwards letter "C") barely show on the lever boss. The front half of the ovals circumference and whatever is inside the oval in front of the letter E are indistinguishable.

The letters O and Q were skipped and not used due to their similar appearance.

It sounds like you have a late model "EG". If so, and it's in "good shape" with only a few minor scratches and the bluing & bore are still in excellent condition, my best guess as to its value would be in the $400-$600 price range with some excellent examples going for as much as $700.

A "schnoble tip" is a lip-like projection on the front tip of the forearm which adds character and class to the rifle's appearance. I've never heard of a "heavy" or "light" schnoble... and I've been hanging around this Forum for over 2 years. Perhaps someone is "pulling-your-leg"?!? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Pictures of delicate and heavy schnoble forends

Well... how 'bout THAT?!? There IS a "delicate" and "heavy" schnoble! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />

Learn something new every day... and that is at the "Savage site", too, eh?

I've been there, so I guess it goes to show I have a REALLY "bad" memory. See what the "golden years" do to ya? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

THANK YOU, Sir! I always enjoy learning something "new"... er... ah... ummmm... at least I think it was new. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

RedForeman,

No, there only two models made that year, one with (EG) and one without (R) the schnoble tip.

Glad to see you are out looking for answers. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

For a full dissertation on the schnable foreend, you might check out the current issue of Rifle for Mule Deer's dissertation on the subject.

Only way to know if put it on eBay. Might bring $250...might bring $750. I think $300-400.

Are you selling or just pricing? What is the barrel length? Is it fitted to a rifle?

RF;

My 99 and yours are VERY close sisters. Mine is an EG, SN 5964xx, .300 Savage, with a "B" boss code. She's in 95% or better shape (fired 18 times) with a period correct (factory?) Lyman peep (insert intact)and proper rear sight blank.

I've got to get this girl in the field this year... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
