After I found the Finnwolf A dealer saw the box and asked if it were for sale. As we were talking I noticed 2 Supergrade model 54 Winchesters. One is a .30-06 in great shape for $575. I picked the other one up since it was the same price and noticed the barrel read .22 Hornet! Then he pointed out the small .222 on the barrel next to the receiver Danged if the fool that owned it didn't ream it out to .222 Rem.

Kind of like stepping on a covey of quail-everything is going on at one time, and we fall short.

Too many 22 Hornet Model 70s were rechambered to 222 during the 1950s. But, at least the guy who rechambered it had the courtesy to stamp 222 into the barrel.

I've a '54 wearing a Shilen K-Hornet tube,that's nestled within a McMillan G&H patterned handle with a 6x on top.
Made it for Big Momma.
Were it not for the 54's trigger actuated boltstop and spongy fire control mechanism,I'd likely dote upon it. Might retrofit a trigger upgrade one of these days,so as to sweeten the pot.
On the bright side,The Deuce in question ain't but a reamer away from being a right proper 223AI...............(grin)

didn't they use .223 diameter (vs .224) bores back then for the Hornet. Along with a slower twist rate? Does these factor into accuracy much?

Mine's rebarreled to 1-14" twist,.224" and gives nice results with the 33gr V-max and H-110.
As to it's issued guise,I can't know....................

I've encountered a few Model 54 and Model 70 Hornets that have been rechambered to 222 over the years. One even had the action cut and shortened to make it a true "short action",that had to be a labor of love. I have also handled Model 54s .30-30s that had been rechambered to .30-40 Krag. Next one of these I lay eyes on is coming home with me if the price is right.
