I recieved my 425 grain Hardcast gas checked bullets from Beartooth bullets
yesterday. I figure I will be shooting a lot of these and likely use them when
working my plains game hunts. I have only used 500's in my Lott so far but I think
these 425's will be a nice recoil reduction for practice shooting as well. Any idea
on loads for the 425 grain bullets. These have taper from the crimp to the front
with a sharp edge and a glass flat front. They will blow through like a paper punch!
They are a prototype and not for sale yet. I'll be testing them in Afrcia and on
targets over the next few weeks and then when I'm in Afrcia this spring and
summer. They should be listed on the beartooth site by summer(American summer)

In my mind I would think 2400-2500fps should be a nice load. That is nearly
6000fpe with a 22 brinell hard cast gas checked bullet with a flat point. Now to
sort out some loads!

JJHack,

I'm suprised Marshall didn't suggest a starting load.

Did he mention the need to flare the case mouth, like loading straight walled handgun cartridges? Apperently those cast bullets are very sensitive to having their bases deformed while seating.

I tried some of Marshalls bullets in my Taylor. When I couldn't get them to group, I ask him why, and that's when he mentioned the need to flare the case mouth.

I still haven't ordered a special die for that. Only RCBS makes the expander die in .416. You may be able to use a Lyman "M" die originally intended for the 45 Colt or 45ACP.

Beartooth is a good company, and I really need to give those bullets another try. I hope your able to work up some good loads, and give Marshall some more business.

Brian, I have the real RCBS dies for this cartridge. I'm not squeeking by with 458 win mag dies. I sprung for the full three die set of 458 Lott " specific" dies. It includes the case mouth expander die and a superior crimp die to anything I have seen yet. This crimp die really folds the brass into the crimp groove!

I have Emailed Marshall and expect he will forward some data. I know others here who have uesd this cartridge so I had hoped they would chime in as well.jj

Jim,

Me thinks Reloader 7 would be a good powder to start with. I had very good accuracy with the 350 gr jacketed bullets and RL 7, and know many folks have used it with 400 gr jacketed bullets. I'd think the 400 gr jacketed loads will be a good starting point for load data.
