My rifles shoot such infinitesimal groups that the human eye cannot measure them.

So I have this on order. I'll finally be able to determine which one is the most accurate.

I don't shoot any factory ammo except in the AK47 with an Aimpoint that is my house gun. It shoots between 2.5 and 3 in. with cheap Russian ammo. I guess that is my most accurate with factory ammo. I would venture a guess that my old 3 times rebarreled Ed Brown .220 AI will outshoot it with pretty much any factory ammo. It will stay in the .3's with H414 and 53's at a shade over 4050 fps. I have a safe full of rifles that have never had a factory-made round chambered in them.

Rem 700 VLS 223 gunbroker $425 with scope, sold the scope and rings for $105 = $320 will shoot all day in the same .5" group at 100. It's actually so boring, I gave it to my dad. He'll put a dot on a paper plate and shot every spot out of the dot, like the game at the fair with the automatic bb guns.

Hard to say because I have shot very few factory loads in my rifles, but my most accurate rifle is a Remington Model 700 Sendero in 25-06.
My 7mm Rem Mag 700 ADL shoots very good too.

I can speculate but not positive as we have 4 new model 12 Savages downstairs in the vault, they have all shot factory ammo at 1-MOA or better. Then comes the handloads!

I have a little .222 cal rifle that shoots .350's all day long. Also have a .270 Klinegunther that will keep 3 shots inside a nickel at 200 yards. My old 6mm Remmy used to shoot .285-.360 24/7 with my handloads.

I always run factory ammo through any new rifle purchased. This way is something is wrong from the very start, factory ammo was in the chamber etc.

Mine, too. It's pretty regularly a 3/4" rifle at 100 yards with Hornady 250's. I don't talk MOA, cause my range only goes to 200 yards, and I can't see that far, anyway. The 4x Conquest it wears ain't the rig for long range target shooting, but I'm pretty thrilled with it for shooting Whelen-sized critters at Whelen-ish distances. Things that stand in front of it die with alarming regularity.

My other hunting rifles are 1" to 1 3/4" shooters, at least with me pressing the trigger. I have a .243 that sprays patterns, but it's off learning manners & civility at Mickey Coleman's Finishing School...

Believe it or not, it's a .375 H&H on a Brevex Mauser action. If I have to bet on having all shots touching, it's the one. My old Swift is close, but not quite. Guess I should shoot prairie dogs with the .375 and lions with the Swift...

And just before hunting season, I decided to shoot one shot from a cold barrel in lower temps than I had during the summer (wanted to make sure my powder wasn't temperature sensitive):

I believe it is my.338 Win Mag. A SS M70 it only shot so-so until I put it in a McMillan stock. Barrel is shortened to 23" FWIW.

It shoots 180's, 200, 210 and 225 grainers equally well. It shoots Bearclaws, Nosler Partitions, Hornady's Speers 200gr Winchesters well.

If my SS '06 Featherweight would shoot Bearclaws well I would say that was the one. It doesn't...

Thats what I am talking about, those rifles that just seem to shoot everything well. Right now I am not sure I have one. I just need more shooting time!

JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H

Mine is an off the shelf Ruger M77 MkII in 6.5x55. This rifle will shoot just about anything into an inch or less. When I want "most accurate" in a high power rifle this is the one I reach for.

My other most accurate rifle is a CZ 452 .22 LR. It's just amazing.

Good shooting!

My Weatherby 06 is about an 1 1/2"- 2" rifle. Average rifle I suppose. The best one so far has been a CDL Whelen (sold it) it shot almost every factory load and handload very well. Although there aren't many factory loads for it.

Tikka 25/06. Hands down. Shoots 120gr fusion ammo in a .312" group. As far as a reloaded rifle that would be my Howa/Hogue 223 1/4" with that one.

raybass;
You have indeed begun a thread with a lot of informative responses. Thanks for doing so and thanks to those who have responded as well.

Partly because of where we lived in proximity to a good gun shop I started handloading back in about '81. That little hobby eventually led to a few wildcats taking roost in the gun safe and even though we can buy some factory ammo about 20 minutes away, we don't seem to do so.

Way back in the day I tried my hand at competing in our local hunter rifle turkey shoots which was the beginning of a lot of frustration and not a little bit of education for me. At that time I was competing with a wonderfully accurate BBR in '06 - but it seemed to like to shoot it's best groups when the barrel was about hot enough to light a cigarette .... frown

Somewhere in there Mike Venturino wrote an article where he expounded on the virtues of rifles that placed the first one or perhaps two shots from a cold, clean barrel where you wanted them. His point, if memory serves, was what good are groups if your first shot isn't where you want it?

I must confess that I became a true believer of Mike's doctrine and preach the same to all who will listen. With that criteria in mind then, the most accurate rifles in the safe is a 3 way tie.

The first is my wife's .308 Norma, which I cobbled together from a wartime Steyr 98 action, a no name barrel, Yugoslav Mark X trigger and a 2nd hand Bishop stock. Five shot groups aren't bragging size with that rifle, but off of a good rest she could nearly always have the first two land 1" high and within " of each other at 100yds.

That gave her confidence to make some fairly fancy shots on local mule deer bucks back when she still hunted.

The 2nd is a .22-.250AI built on another wartime 98 action - a DWM I think it is. I ordered a 26" No. 4 contour Douglas Premium from IT&D and had the same gunsmith up the valley from us who installed the barrel on my wife's .308 Norma do the final fitting. I modified a stock from a S&W 1500 that I picked up at a local gun show for $20 and added a Timney trigger.

Again with that rifle, the 5 shot groups aren't what I'd hoped for with the bullets that I like on coyotes - 55gr V Max or Ballistic Tips. The first bullet out of a cold, clean barrel will go where asked though, much to the dismay of more than one local coyote. wink

The last rifle is our youngest daughter's .250AI built on a 722 action with a stainless RKS match barrel, a 700 trigger and a modified laminated ADL stock. It's the only one that breaks the mold in that it will put the remaining 4 shots into small groups if we do our part, especially so with the 80gr TTSX load we've found for it now.

So with apologies for taking up so much bandwidth, that's what's been useful for us as far as rifles that we'll take out for a walk and try to shoot something with.

Thanks again to those who have responded and thanks again raybass for the thread. All the best to you and yours this weekend.

Regards,
Dwayne

I have a Rem. Sendero SS in 7mm STW with nothing done to it except to lighten the factory trigger to about 2 lbs. It will shoot six consequtive 3 shot groups of 1/2" or less with 4 different hand loads. If I mix those loads up they will still Shoot to 1" including the first shot.
Not great by bench rest standards, but a great hunter especially if your hunting woods and beanfields.

I have a sporterized 6.5 Jap that was a local gunsmith's pet before he retired. Using the Hornaday plastic tips, this rifle is one of my most accurate I own.
