The bolt handle is so far forward of the trigger, it looks to me like it would be awkward to reach up and grab it. It's definitely different when coming off of normal bolt actions, and does take some practice. Not a bad system, and without having to lift the bolt it seemed to cycle very fast. But.. yes, it does take some getting used to. Never hunted with mine, probably never will. Got it on clearance back around '98 and it's got a bit of figure to the wood, so I keep it around to admire and fondle.

Oh, and happy birthday, ThomasMagnum!
And, Larry/goodiewrench, don't quote me. First, I don't like you. Second, my high post count doesn't mean squat except that I talk a lot in the Savage forum and ESPECIALLY doesn't mean I know anything significant about Mauser 96's. I happen to own one (got that, a sample of one), but I'll be the first to admit that I'm ignorant on anything to do with the quality of their construction or parts.
Unlike you, I know my few areas of expertise versus my huge swaths of ignorance.

That .270 WCF w/ the crazy huge cheapo scope has been on gunbroker for a long, long time.
I went out and shot my M96 last night w/ 165 gr SSTs & RL22 as well as w/ 168 gr NBTs & RS-Hunter. The former gave anemic speeds (2700 fps, about 300 fps shy of Nosler's published numbers??) and a one-hole group at 100 yds, while the latter gave me a 1" group at 2900 fps.
I'm disappointed to hear that the opportunity to purchase one in 300 WM was missed. I really love mine a lot.
As for the comment about it being a cheap rifle I don't see that. Mine has a good barrel which is free floated in the stock, and the stock has an epoxied-in aluminum bedding block that makes glass bedding a moot point.
Great rifle.

Hello every one, So I missed out on the Mauser but I came across a new in the box Winchester Model 70 Featherweight Deluxe in a 270WSM. It is a limited edition model made in 2008. It felt great in my hands and was ascetically appealing. The only thing I dislike is the three position safety, I prefer tang safeties (but I'm sure I'll get used to it). I have been handling a lot of refiles lately and I was impressed with the quality of this gun. Everything just fits together perfectly. I am going to post a help thread on what size rings I should buy. I'll post the link to the thread once it is created. I will also have pics of my new rifle for you all to view So please fallow me over to it and check it out. Thanks again for all your help.
Outstanding. Now all we need is a deck of cards.
