I have a 99f in 250-3000 and its the only 99 I've ever fired,so I would like to ask all who might know ,,if it is within the "normal" to expect one of these guns to fire 3/4" groups at 200 yards with factory ammo? I can't get those kinds of results with all factory ammo,,but I can expect and get em with Rem PSP 100 .Is that normal ?Ive got a model 70 that will shoot em a little tighter,,but it is a bolt and a much heavier barrel in a 270.

That's very good for 100 grain bullets. How many shots do you declare to be a group?

What is the SN range of that F??

oh I have always been very pleased with the rifle. It was given to me by a customer who asked me to take it on trade. He was a wonderful man,but neither him or myself knew the value of the gun.He asked me to take it at a value of $175.00.I had never seen or heard of a 250-3000 at the time. I shouldered it and the rest is history. I promptly put a little 3x9 simmons on it and have used it fairly regularly a couple times a year since. It has a fairly sweet trigger too.

I believe the appropriate expression used by a gun writer from the sixties upon finding such a rifle was "wrap it in swaddling cloths." 'Pleased for your sake.

A local gunsmith assures me he had a 99 in the shop that was capable of "one holers" but personally I never encountered one. May be it's just my inability... smile

Dunright, yes, all of the 1950's 99F's are featherweight models. There was an earlier 1899F, as well as a 1920's/1930's 99F takedown - but both are different than the 50's version.

A lot of the pre-1960 99's in 250 only shoot the 100gr bullets decently rather than very well due to the twist rate in the barrel rifling - optimized for short/lighter bullets rather than heavier. You have a winner, don't let go of that one.

That you have a 99F that can hold a 3/4", 200-yd group is unbelievable. I've owned two 99Fs (a .243 & a .308) that couldn't do that at 50 yards. The current issue of American Rifleman has an excellent summary on the history of both the .250 and .300 Savage rounds. The .250, AKA .250-3000, was a popular whitetail round in its time, as was the .300. The .250 was compromised in that Savage sought velocity over performance, thus designing their rifle around the 87 grain, rather than the 100 grain bullet. Both rounds remain excellent whitetail cartridges and factory loaded ammo is still available.

So, this gun will deliver 3/8 MOA accuracy consistently, meaning all the time or at least more times than not? How about with 5-shot, or 10-shot groups? Or did you get lucky and got one 3-shot 3/8 MOA group once? Pardon my skepticism but the internet is so full of miraculously accurate rifles that I don't know what to believe anymore. Even in today's world of match-grade barrels for everyman, fiberglass stocks, affordable world-class optics, and reloading components made to a previously unknown level of precision, a true 3/8 MOA rifle is a rarity- not to mention a 55 year old light barreled lever action with a rate-of-twist marginally ok for 100 grain bullets.

If it is indeed that accurate then indeed you have a real treasure. Believe me when I say I debated long and hard about posting this, for I certainly don't wish to cast aspersions or stir up a [bleep] storm in any way. Merely expressing incredulity on one hand, and congratulations if due on the other.

"Fantastic" (definition)- a) based on fantasy, b) so extreme as to challenge belief

Yes, but it has a leopold on it with thinner reticles, and it is a for-sure tack-driver with a little sweeter trigger. It is the most accurate I have ever fired. I have considered some competiton shooting with it.The Simmons was a cheap improvement on the 4x that came with the 250.It adjusted well, and has stayed on the mark for as long as it has been there.I think close to 20 years. I will never sell the 250.It is too easy to carry and handles way to good to think about any type of alternative.I didn't love it as much b-4 I tried the rem ammo though.I hope they keep the standards up an I hope they keep making it.
