Just wondering if anyone has tried the 90g GMX in an older 1 in 14" twist 250. I'm guessing they're a little too long to stabilize, but hoping that someone has experience with reload recipe to prove me wrong.

I'm looking to get ahold of some new GMX bullets for my .250s but as of yet have found none in Canada.

Hope someone will pitch in with the length of these bullets, are these sub 1"?

Unfortunately for me, I'm not part of the "we" with 1-10 twist rifles (yet), as my only 250 is a 1915 production 1899 TD. It's a fine "shooter" grade rifle, but I'd just feel better if it would handle somewhat heavier +/or premium style bullets.

Can't say that I've tried em, but have heard the speer hot cores are the best candidate in the 100 grainers for the 1:14 barrels.

To bad Barnes stopped making the 70 or 75 grainer years ago. Should of bought some, but at the time I never had a .25 cal.

I guess the 87 grain cup-and-cores that have worked for almost 100 years will just have to keep on working. smile

I shoot 'bout as much as at least the average guy. I just do NOT understand the experimentation with the .250. Shoot the Speer or Hornady 87 grain pill (if you prefer) out of the 1/14 and 100 grainers out of the 1/10 ROT rifles and be done with it. 3 or 13 grains of bullet ain't gonna mean squat to a deer. I've killed deer with both and as I recall, one deer wasn't any deader than the other. JMO!!!!!!!!!

I don't know if it is the case here, but some hunters are restricted to non-lead projectiles. For those unfortunate individuals, the requested info can be important.

Unfortunately the average age on the this part of the forum is nearing 100 and they don't adapt to change easily.

I'm not "nearing" 100 in any way shape or form. I always enjoy your posts and you somehow seem to make sense most of the time. Change? Why change what works? If you live in a state that bans the use of lead, why ask in the first place? You have no alternative. Why ask a group of collectors when you could ask a group more in tune to hunting/shooting?

This deer fell victim to an 87 grain Hornady. A bullet Hornady says is a varmit bullet. Could this deer be any deader with a bullet that weighed 3 grains more? I think not.

Would this heart stopped beating with a 100 grain pill any sooner? I think not.

When I started hunting I was taught to hunt, to read sign, and to learn the habits of the animal I sought. I was told to use a 30-06 with a 220 grain bullet. It was the only thing that should be used. This was 50 years ago. I think I HAVE changed from a 16 year old kid. Lets's see. 16 + 50 = 66. 100 - 66 = 34. I got lotsa years left to change. But I'll still do as much as I can the same way I'm doing them today, because what I do works for me.

When I was 18 the catch phrase was "don't trust anyone over 30." Now that I'm 58 I don't trust anyone under 30! grin

What's 3-13 grains among friends. Thank god I don't hunt, or plan to hunt, anywhere lead is banned. Nothing wrong with monometal bullets, I just have more to worry about than starting from scratch with all new bullets.

While I think we agree in principal...that is that an 87 grain cup and core bullet used with in it's effective range with good shot placement is a more than sufficient deer killer.... There IS a lot more to the argument about modern bullets than just weight though. Construction plays a key role in increasing a bullets effectiveness and thus usable range. one can not possibly argue that the modern bullets are not better and given a less than ideal situation, will likely perform better. The weight actually seems to play a much lesser roll.

Well, I finally know what LBK looks like. Nice looking deer though smile And here I thought the "LBK" had something to do with turkey hunting prowess smile
