Robert Ruark's "The Old Man and the Boy" is one of my all-time favorite books. Does anyone have a suggestion for anything similar? I really like the old-time nostalgic tone of the whole thing. Thanks!

I liked the old man and the kid and his book on kudu hunting. I like Capstick better. Death in the Long Grass was great. A biography he did on Wally Johnson - The Last Ivory Hunter was good too. I also like Tom Brown's book The Tracker.

A few classics that have a somewhat similar feel, not quite as nostalgic.
Gene Hill's books. Hill Country comes to mind.
Burton Spiller, the Poet Laureate of grouse hunting, Grouse Feathers and More Grouse Feathers
For big gamne, some of Russel Annabels stories have that old timer feel.

Put me in for:
Jim Corbett, Maneaters of Kumaon, My India, Jungle Lore, The Maneating leopard of Rudraprayag, etc. Something about his matter of fact straight accounts that works for me.
Finn Aagaard, Aagaards Africa. I really like his style. Alot like Corbetts.
John Taylor, Pondoro Last of the Ivoy Hunters, African rifles and cartridges, Maneaters and Marauders. Just fun, whether they were true or not.
W.D.M Bell, Bell of Africa.
McIntosh, Robertson, Wise, and Evans for wing shooting, dogs, and shotgun stuff.
Zane Grey and Patrick McManus for color and humor.
Hemingway: The Old Man and the Sea, The Sun also Rises, For Whom the Bell Tolls.
Have you READ the original Maneaters of Tsavo? It also is very good.
And then there is this guy named Barsness.....

"The Winds of Havoc" by Adelino Serras Pires. A transplant from Portugal, he grew up in Africa and was involved in the ongoing self-destruction. Chilling at times.
I am happy to say I have a 2003 copy of this book signed by Adelino and Fiona Capstick at Reno SCI.

IMO, no list of hunting books is complete without including One Man's Wilderness by Warren Page. Still my favorite hunting book.
Hunting the Plains by John Barsness is great if you enjoy hunting the critters that are found in the Great Plains.

Gordon MacQuarrie, "The Old Duck Hunter" series; hunting and fishing in Wisconsin in the 1930s, 40s and 50s. Might go back to the late 20s, can't remember. I believe Amazon's got them. There's four books.
