President Obama called on Republicans Wednesday to drop their opposition to tax increases, saying "everybody else" is willing to sacrifice their "sacred cows" for deficit reduction and urging Republicans to do the same.

The president, playing political hardball, characterized the debate for Republicans as a choice between revamping a tax code that favors millionaires and depriving children of government aid.

"We're going to have to tackle spending in the tax code," he said. "It would be nice if we could keep every tax break there is, but we've got to make some tough choices here if we want to reduce our deficit."

He pushed proposals to end tax breaks for corporate jet owners, as well as for oil and gas companies -- and claimed that everything from food safety to college scholarships to the weather service could be in jeopardy if revenue is not included as part of a deal.

"Ask Republican constituents if they're willing to compromise their kids' safety so some corporate jet owner continues to get a tax break," he said....

The sacred cow obama wants to sacrifice is America.

So THAT'S where spending is tackled. I get it now. I've been thinking spending got tackled in the budget.

I watched some of that Jackass's speech. He is truly a clown who doesn't "get it".

He kept carrying on about subsidies for "big rich oil". There are no subsidies, only tax breaks that oil companies and all other big corporations get.

I imagine that 80% of the people that have 401k's and those that have retirement savings, somewhere have some of their monies invested in "Big Oil", either thru IRA's, mutual funds or whatever. Most don't even realize it.

When big companies do good, America does good, and I do good thru my investments. People need to realize this and stop putting a burden on big corporations.

One day I hope to retire and live on my investments. Jackass doesn't understand that. He has never worked for a living and has nothing invested. To him, anybody that has enough money to invest, obviously has too much money and they are the enemy..!

Fair Tax doesn't have 'codes'.

and the GOP will probably give in to their sick desire to 'reach across the aisle', and present hussein with everything he wants.

No, they'll give in, because in the end, they are only concerned about .gov.

The Republicans in the House need to tell Obama that when he and the Dem-controlled Senate sends them a balanced budget they can pass without any new taxes, then, and only then, can they talk about tax increases for his pet projects.

Obama needs to look at Greece and see what socialism does to a country, and then again maybe he has and that is why he is bankrupting the country. you can't tax yourself out of debt . Cutting Spending in Washington is the only answer plus cutting taxes not raising them.

The only questions now are will the Republicans stand firm and refuse any new taxes and will they refuse to raise the debt limit?

Obwan cares very little for how negatively this outcome affects us.

He doesn't care about what�s happening with Greece, I don�t think he really cares about socialism as an economic model.

I think he and most of those he surrounds himself with (and identifies with)people who care about power to �the state� and of course they are �the state�.

This will be the tipping point.

We are watching history unfold.

We enjoyed a tax cut at the beginning of the wars and it was fun watching buildings blow up through television cameras installed on smart bombs. But now, can we pay the 3.8 trillion cost of war since 9/11 by cutting medicare and social security? Just asking to see if the wide variety of folks on the fire believe cuts alone will really be enough?

Nope!

I'm willing to sacrifice some sacred cows. I'll sacrifice obamacare, welfare, foreign aid, and a lot more.
