My "Federal" arrived today. Not too shabby for a mere "black pad with swamp walnut" huh? Have to decide how to scope it now. I have a B&L Balvar 1.5-6x20 on the shelf that just might be the cat's azz.

Yeah those "custom shop" 45-70s did have nice wood they were built when ?
They are both selling real well too. Owned one years ago, nice rifle but hardly a "production black pad".

Probably fewer of them built than Deluxe Sedgleys back in the 30s'.

Just a Deluxe Sedgley 22 Hornet with nice French except that it was a regular 03 action that was shortened to fit the Hornet, can't say Ruger ever did anything close.

Just the lighting.

When the pic exposure is adjusted, there is some nice, colorful burl in the buttstock.

There probably have been a higher percentage of standard production Ruger no 1 rifle made with nice wood since Bill Ruger died in 2002 than in the 20 years before.

There are many Ruger no 1 black pad rifles for sale online with nice wood on them . Truthfully about the same percentage of the overall production as in 1980 or 1990 or 2000.

To all gunmaker critics-
