Got an issue maybe you guys have come across. I've been using 777 2FG in a sidelock (Lyman Great Plains Rifle) with CCI caps and I get spotty ignition. The 777 doesn't exactly ignite like black powder but you don't have to worry about cleaning your barrel in ten minutes either.

Does anyone know whether the finer 3FG ignites any easier or if the Remington hotter caps would make a difference. I'm picking up a civil war reproduction rifle and I don't want to run into the same problem with that gun.

The 777 works a-ok with my inline but that's using a 209 primer.

Any help would be appreciated.

with black powder you dont have to worry about cleaning the barrel in 10 minutes.

3f probably would be better. T7 requires a darn good deal of heat to set it off.

Look at the cabelas website and order the spitfire nipple with the hollow base. It spreads the flame around most and helps ignite the powder easier.

I just ordered a musket nipple and picked up some 3fg. I'll see how that works.

The musket cap should work fine....lots more fire. Poor ignition is one of many reasons I never used imitations in muzzleloaders. I've tried near all of them but never did find one that was as good as plain ol' black powder....and I don't clean my barrels in 10 minutes after firing.

I use 3f in all my rifles, and that includes 62 smoothbore.
Typical day at the range shooting my 45 cal T/C Hawken, I usually fire around 20 times or so, and never clean between shots.3f will burn cleaner, faster, and you use about 10% less per load.

My 45 likes 60 gr 3f or 70 gr 2f. If using Pyrodex, I use P (pistol) powder instead of Pyrodex RS The equivalent of 2f black powder. Pyrodex works well, but the Goex is better.I'm not familiar with 777.
