If by .22, your talking about .22LR. there are dozens of moderators that will do an excellent job...The main thing is to use subsonic ammo...
The old P-H moderators were litterally just a stack of bent washers in a tube held tightly to gether with a spring...In theory, the mod could be taken apart to be cleaned, but in reallity you were best not to bother...
A spray through with carb cleaner periodically kept things getting too bad, and even though the units were mild steel, they lasted for years..
You could use the tac-sol SBX 10/22 barrel which is 12.5 inches with a 4 inch permanently mounted shroud that holds the can. There is a toggle that turns the 10/22 into a "bolt" action. I will look for a link.

So many options... but I want QUIET.... silence...
Best option so far is the mentioned 10-22 barrel that would take a can... and can could go on pistol then.....
Could toss 10-22 into a better stock.... fire it single shot sounds like so the action noise is gone then if needed, and drop a Kidd trigger into it, though the Volquartsen I put in isn't shabby.....
We can keep Larry Root and all his idiotic blabber and user names on here, but we can't get Ralph back..... Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, over....
rost - the bolt noise made by my Mark II slapping about is fairly loud, relatively speaking. I would think you would be better off with a bolt. I've shot the 10/22 with the intergal suppressor and it was mighty nice. You'll also find when the bullet hits the target it makes noise. Obviously all quieter than a non-suppressed unit. Kind of funny all the things one can hear without ear plugs.
Bet if you ask around you'll find someone close by that will allow you to try their model.

Savage is making a neat .22 bolt gun the MkII FV-SR now that is set up to be suppressed gun. It threaded 1/2x28, has a moderately heavy barrel, and the accu-trigger. Its a little "Tacticool" for some folks maybe, but looking one over the other day I was impressed.
Savage has a new bolt action 22 that has a threaded barrel especially for a can, 1/2"-24 IIRC. I bought a Gem Tech that will fit both the Savage and my Ruger MkII with Tactical Solutions Pac Lite barrel. Just awaiting the paperwork to be approved. When it is I'll let you know how it works. BTW, Tactical Solutions makes a barrel for the 10/22 as well, and it looks to be a nice one. it also comes ready for a can, specifically the Gem Tech.

Yes I do use Trailboss in the 308. The Whisper load was a little hot and went supersonic. Usually it is much quieter. The 44 mag is more a function of can size. I am using a pistol can and the lack of volume inside shows.
The 308 Is a 700P - 11.25 Twist. I only shoot up to 180's out of it.
The Whisper is a 700 with 8 twist. Will shoot 240's just fine.
I built the whisper BEFORE Trailboss came out. 2ndwind, I agree with Trailboss the Whisper could be obsolete in a bolt gun. The 308 is very versatile, especially if you run a scope with turrets and know how to spin them. I can switch between supersonic and subsonic loads with a twist of the dial, and have to kill deer.
The thing about a subsonic trailboss load is to work down a load. Yes down. A typical 1lb powder can only hold 13 oz of Trailboss. If you stuff a 308 case full you will still have less than 15 gr of powder.
The load I shoot is 9.8 gr with a 180 RN at about 1050 fps. I have also experimented with 170 flat points. Be advised on game you will not get any significant expansion. But you can kill em quiet
