the Timber Fairy has dealt another good card...

no brass yet, picked up dies last week, still need to chase down both .475LB and .480ruger brass, so wont be shooting it for a bit.

balances well, feel reminds me of my 1-A whelen.

saw this article on feeding the .475 a while back, eagerly looking forward to trying some loads.
.475 Linebaugh #1

been torn on scoping this one, scope is sitting here ready, matte VX-111 1.5-5x in low rings...but i am really digging the idea of a NECG peep on this one too.

what say ye, gents.....glass it, or peep?

Good link, too on the .475 loads - although I was kind of surprised it wasn't showing more velocity.

And I confess I'd probably scope it...

Can't hit what you can't see, go glass.

Pistol cases don't gain tremendously with longer barrels, and yest those results are quite a bit less than I would have expected. But it looks like 400 gr @ 1700 fps would be achievable, and that's not exactly going to bounce off of stuff.

CCI 350, H-110 and big lead bullets are a great combo. I've found the 480 ruger is very friendly to cast, same goes for the 475.

A 300 +/- gr cast over 9-10gr of unique should put you right in 22lr velocity range, with steller accuracy and nice big holes.

458Lott....good lookin lineup of cast there.

475 & 480 brass is due to arrive this week, along with 325gr FNGC and 400gr FN molds, and a bit of assorted jacketed bullets.

probably eventually have mountain molds make an LBT-style GC mold of around 375gr or thereabouts.

what bullet is that long nosed GC second from the right? with that much weight forward, looks like that one leaves plenty of powder space. wink

i stuck the scope on it for now, at least till i run some rounds through it.

My buddy Dennis had Mountain molds make him a custom what he calls XLFN, and I ended up trading him for the mold. The cannalure is placed to allow maximum nose length in the SRH cylinder, and powder capacity is the same as a 475 Lingebaugh. So instead of having a 480 re-chambered, you just use a custom bullet to do the same thing wink

When he was working up loads he was at 1350 fps using Lil gun. I found out my std ~400 gr charge of 21 gr H-110 provided 1200 fps and 1" 5 shot 50 yd accuracy, so my load work was done. An extra 150 fps doesn't sound like much, but with a 400 gr bullet in a handgun, the recoil increase is tremendous. I never wanted to make my 480 into a 475, I've shot enough 475's to know I can't handle that level of recoil in a handgun, funny thing is rifle recoil doesn't bother me, well until I got to 600 gr bullets in my 500 Jeffrey.

The bullet on the far right is a 460 gr WFN from a custom ballisticast mold, they just sunk the 440 gr cherry deeper and my specs were 450 gr, but they finished right at 460 from ww's. I crimped it in the first lube groove as seated to the cannalure the gas check would swell a 480 case and was able to get 1100 fps, and same 1" 50 yd accuracy (scoped, my iron ability is about 2" at 50). But it was too much of a good thing and extraction was slightly sticky. I think a 440 gr is about max practical in the 480.

Here is a pic of the 275 gr swc mold and the 400 gr XLFN. Mountain molds does great work. Personally I prefer the aluminum cavities, brass is the most temp sensitive material I've found, won't cast well if too cold or too hot.
