Friend called the other day his brother had to drop out of a black bear hunt they had planned during the 2nd week (22nd August) of the season near Atikokan, Ontario. It will be a semi-guided hunt. I am thinking of going to fill in for his brother. What do think, what are the chances we will see bear? Waste of time and resources?

im my opinion a little early in the season for the bear but dont know about hunting season there.

the lastest bear i ve seen taken in august was at 58 in northern quebec so the fur was not that bad but a few weeks of wait may have be great too ...

The hunt has moved to August a few years back, but they den up mid september in cool years so they are eating like crazy then, and moving. I live a couple hours eaast of Atikokan and usually hunt mine end August/early Sept. I hunt primarily for meat but the hides are near prime.

1998 was the last year of the spring hunts, so they tacked on a couple of weeks to the fall hunts for the following years.

Better fall hunts typically are better for baiting when the berry crops are down. Good areas will draw bear regardless. With the opportunity available, I'd go......

Nothing wrong with late August, my baits are being hit already and our season begins Sept. 1st here in south-central Ontario.

There are lots of bears. smile

I like stalking in the blueberry patches. Act like a bear and munch berries on your hands and knees. I have got very close like 20-25 yds. Just make sure the wind is blowing at you. I called them one year with a rabbit squeal predator call, but am a little skittish now as they come in looking for dinner and that year I got my bear at 10 yds running at me. Baited bear are usually pretty calm unless there are multiple bears working the bait.

Take the trip and have a blast.
