If I bought this Shaw barrel I'm looking at, I was wondering how I could finish the metal on it. If I had it parkerized, would that change the barrel properties? (hurt straightness/accuracy, 4140 Gun Grade Chrome Moly Steel) Can you recomend any other finishes that a novice could do? (the parkerizing I would have a guy do if possible)

I last Parkerized (phosphated) barrels more than 20 years ago, a Shilen and an air-gauged Douglas. Both were chrome moly steel still in the white, and both shot superbly well -- and still do for that matter. Coat away...

Some gunsmiths don't even plug the bore when they Parkerize.

Parkerizing is done after all parts have been blasted to get the same over all look. The barrel needs to be plugged. The parts are submerged for about 6 to 8 minutes at a temp. of 180 to 190 F. So to answer your question no parkerizing done right will not hurt the way the barrel shoots. HTH Doug

Parkerizing and any other coloring treatment short of try to color case hardened or something similarly dumb and very hot should be fine. I blue, parkerize and cera-kote all the time. Never hurts a thing. Swab the bore quick when your done, a truly degreased bore really likes to rust. One with any coloring solution more so. Tapered wooden dowel will work fine for one time use plugs. Larger for the chamber of course. Soft enough you can tap them in and get a good seal, remember they have to come back out.

Wait, see if you like the look of the two together first.

I did a Mauser with a take off barrel, dropped it in the solution, and the barrel was stainless. Liked the 2tone look so I kept it.
Did 2 identical 10/22 barrels. One plugged and the other unplugged. 10 5 shot groups from both barrels with same lot ammo produced no definitive results either way.
