My latest purchase, and earlyst Rifle. The most common 1899, so I think I'll call it a 1898. From Robert Sears #s 10.000-10.300 = 1898. Is this correct?

That's neat, and in good shape. Though the buttstock looks like it has a perchbelly. Is it the original stock?

I hope so. But have not checked #s yet. I'll beat it home and check right now.

nice condition for a VERY early 1899... not the earliest we have seen since GW posted his but way up there for sure! I'd get a letter...

I just looked at the pics again... man, that really is a ton of original condition for a very early gun that was meant to be used! Wonder if it went to an early employee? City founder? etc and explains why it saw little use.

Yep all #s match, and don't appear to have been remarked in any way. The seller said they matched, but only showed pics of reciever and bottom of barrel #s. Had me worried for sure. I thought perchbelly-riflebutt, would have been the most common. Not so?

Perchbelly stocks didn't start until around the 76,000 serial number range.

Odd. Maybe a factory replacement?

Gonna order a letter?

Never say never with Savage, but it's definitely not mainstream. Good luck!

Also it will be interesting to see who it was sold to.

Sure is a nice early number. And it is very encouraging that the numbers all match. That is a great sign wink

I'd say replaced wood to, usually you find 1895 wood on early numbers like that.

I didn't look carefully enough the first time. I can tell the #s on the buttstock have been ground away and replaced.

Very common to send a rifle back for repair and refinish in the early days. Hope for a work order in the log book.

Hard to get one past this group. grin wink Still a nice rifle.
