You can use anything you want, BH209 is water soluble. The tc stuff is OK but not necessary. My personal preference is Hoppe's for my in-lines. I wouldn't use bore butter on an inline myself.

Not true at all.
Blackhorn209 needs a solvent thats oil based. You use your typical cleaner that you use on smokeless centerfires.
Water cleaners will just make a friggin big mess and not do worth a squat.
My 2 favorites are birchwood casey bore scrubber and butches bore shine. They 2 really seem to cut the fouling the best.
Before cleaning with solvent, run 3 DRY patches to push out the loose fouling in the bore and then follow up with wet solvent patches.
I prefer the bore scrubber though as it hardly has any smell to it.

Water cleaners will just make a friggin big mess and not do worth a squat. In a word, bullsh**. That may be what their literature says, and what people say on internet forums, but water-based solvents do fine on BH209. I just shot mine this morning, 15 rounds to make sure I'm good to go for the elk season. My practice is to swab between shots with a spit patch, and it always removes a good amount of fouling and comes out black. When I get home I normally finish with Hoppe's, but after reading your post I decided to try an experiment. I cleaned the bore with a couple spit patches and then some T/C #13 and a tight-fitting jag. Then I tried solvent. The solvent patches came out clean. That means the water-based solvents had already removed the fouling.

with blackhorn209 you can remove most fouling just by running dry patches. If BH209 is a nitro based powder like some say it is, cleaning with water based cleaners is like trying to clean your underwear with spit.
Spit patching between shots with BH209 is completely unneeded.

Yes, I know that but it's a habit and it's how I hunt (one fouler with a spit patch afterward) so that's how I practice.
Spit patches removed all the fouling and there was none left for the solvent patches to remove. There was no mess, either.
So water-based solvents work. End of story.
Try it some time.
Besides, my underwear never get dirty.

always listen to what the manf. tells you to clean with. An oil based solvent.
Water cleaners can leave behind rust. Oil based cleaners do not. Thats another + to using BH209, no water - no rust.

Yup, water-based solvents can leave behind rust. And if that was a big problem, all the guys who clean with water would be SOL.
But that wasn't the guy's question.
The fact is, water-based solvents work on BH209; if you don't believe it, then try it.
I don't normally do my cleaning at home with anything but Hoppe's.

What can I tell you. Spit patches between shots work in my rifle. BH209 doesn't leave enough fouling in the bore to make a mess.
Nothing wrong with Hoppe's though.

Nothing wrong with Hoppe's though. I have used Hoppe's #9, my wife loves the smell of Hoppe's #9. Doc
