I bought one of these for $220 in almost like new shape. It's a .22 Hornet.
Ugly, slabsided, barrel-band. It won't extract Remington factory ammo for some reason, but shoots Hornady just fine...or maybe it had a burr in the chamber that I removed.
Anyway, it shoots about 1.25", four shots into about a half, and the other flew out. That's with Hornady factory ammo, which is about 12 gr. of H110. Put a 3 x 9 cheap scope and it came with sidemounts. If you get a chance on one of these rifles, I'd take it. Provided it's cheap enough.
My first centerfire rifle was one of these. Nostalgia is worth the price.

My dad had one of these and it never wore a scope the whole time he owned it. I wonder where it is now?

Congratulations!
I have one as well. Can't say it's like new, but it shoots very well. (Though not quite as tight as it's grandfather, my Savage 23D.) The 342 is the workhorse, and the 23D is my "Sunday go to meeting" Hornet.
The .30-30's in the 340 series will also amaze anyone who pooh-poohs cheap guns where accuracy is concerned.

Bought one used back in the 60s. K2.5 Weaver, walnut stock.
Nasty trigger, poor extraction with handloads, but usually fetches WW factory loads out without a fuss? My first varmint rifle. Killed a mess of woodchucks, crows and foxes with that homely ol' thing years ago.
If three or more people think you're a dimwit, chances are at least one of them is right.

Nice find, Gene. Congrats; I've had my eye on a 340 in .222 Rem for a while and I think you may have sold me on it!
