I've always been intriqued by the sliding breech French shotguns, now is the time to think seriously about one.

From what I've read it seems that the Charlin has the smoothest action and the Darne the strongest.

I'm intrested in finding a 16ga but wouldn't rule out a 12. which do you think would be a better shotgun? this will be used for upland birds over pointing dogs and some ducks over decoys all with bismuth, nice shot or ITX shot.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Don't know much about them but have a Darne, given to me from the Ole man its a very smooth action and shoots like a dream, well balanced and slim where it needs to be, its a 16 ga but short chamber, chokes where changd in it back in the 60's closer now to IMP/MOD and MOD

I have not shot a Charlin, but I have shot a very nice Darne and I agree with Kaywoodie based on my (one-sided) experience.

The Darne was a very well-balanced shotgun, and the action (and triggers) were perfection.

I have owned them both and am currently shooting a Charlin. They really are two different designs and Darnes probably outnumber Charlins at least 4 to 1. At some point Darne bought out Charlin and continued production for quite a while. Most of the Charlins I have seen had "English" style stocks (as does mine) while most Darnes will have a Prince of Whales grip. I have kept the Charlin because, for whatever reason, the stock configuration fits me better than any Darne that I have owned.

Can anyone explain how the sliding breech locks up with the dolls head? Does the dolls head toggle?
