I know there are a few out there that owners or previous owners (Jed, pretty sure I remember you having one of these) felt were factory jewelled bolts... and we are talking pre-250,000 serial number guns... no need to bring up the late 50s era guns.
Anyone have pictures? Anyone ever seen it on a card? As I recall from a past discussion the jewelling was smaller in diameter but I wanted to confirm that. Any idea when this was done... I own a Crescent grade and it is not jewelled, when you get up to around Rival and Monarch is it standard? Or was this only on rare occasions when specially requested?
I've looked over all of the pictures on my hard drive of high end guns 1899s and could not find any.

Damascening of the action first shows up in the 1916 (#60 catalog). Did they do it before that...yes. Many that I have seen on Specials were done on the lever-web, also (I think it was 20's and 30's rifle that I saw it on the web).

My first year 250-3000 has a jeweled bolt and lever web. Is it original? I don't know. The rifle has special wood and checkering, and was delivered to J. DeP Lynch, corporate secretary of Savage at the time, and was back at the factory four times for unspecified work, although once it was probably for barrel replacement, as it has a full thread barrel. At the time of the factory work orders, it was owned by Fred J. Rath, one time mayor of Utica and later NY state senator. There was quite a bit of discussion concerning the rifle about three years ago on the forum. I had it at Savagefest 2010, but I don't know if anyone there came to any conclusions about it.

Drew,
My special ordered 1899B flame checkered DOM 1903 serial number 39,4xx has a factory jewelled bolt. I will check to see if I have pictures of it and post if I do.

Has anyone seen this mentioned in a factory letter - and if so, how was it referred to?

Although my 99G is above the 250000 cut off, its serial 324xxx, it has no engine turning on the bolt.
