Marlin 39A or M.

Extra points if Swampy doesn't like them.

Browning BL22 works nicely. Light, accurate and very user friendly, but a little more spendy than the two you mentioned. The 39A is a nice levergun, but heavier. Handle them all and see what 'calls' to you. wink

I'd go BL-22 or Marlin 39A.

I've shot a lot of Henrys and I have yet to see a Marlin or Winchester that I would trade for my Golden Boy. The rifle that I have is extremely well made and very accurate. The action is silky smooth and I have popped balloons with it at 175 yards.

No one has mentioned that the Marlin 39 is a take-down model.

Here's mine, a 1971 39D:

one thing about the Marlin is it's US-made. The Browning is a miroku, made in Japan. Same as my A-bolt. Not saying that is a negative or positive, just a FYI.

Do yourself a favor and look at a 94/22. IMO the rest don't compare.

The 1975 Marlin 39A is the best shooting 22 I have ever owned.I didn't know just how accurate it really was until I recently scoped it.I was shooting @ and hitting the bullet holes @ fifty yards with it.They have a good solid feel about them too.

+100, I have a first year production 94/22, it is the slickest workin' finest shootin' little 22 LR lever I have ever seen, shot, or handled, to the the OP, I'd look real hard in the direction of an older clean 94/22.

While I've owned only ne Mod. 39, I grew to hate it because of its failure to consistently extract. I finally dumped it and, years later, bought a Henry. The Henry is slick as snot on a glass doorknob and shoots circles around a friend's Mod. 39.

Frankly, I grow very tired of people trashing Henrys because Henrys are supposedly "trashy." My suspicion is that those who most loudly denigrate Henrys have never owned one. It is simply fashionable to parrot the tired refrain about how marvelous Model 39's are.

Well, yeah! If someone is looking for a quality rifle, and sees a bunch of plastic and cast metal parts on one, why would he ever consider buying one?

You're right, of course. I'd completely forgotten what appalling pieces of garbage the venerable Nylon 66 was, to say nothing of Glocks and their progeny.

Guess I could have worded that better. confused

Tried to say simply: Why would anyone intentionally buy something he could readily observe was inferior? If he has a choice.

My first rifle was a 9422 that I bought in 1973. I still have it and it still fires every time, never fail. LR, or shorts, every time. Have no experience with either the Marlin or the Henry. If it was me, and I know it's not, I would look for a used 9422 and call it a day.

I havent had any experience with either the Mossberg or the Henry, but Id really be looking at the Henry myself. They've got lots of positive reviews, so they must be doing something right. As for Marlin, well as a member of Marlin Owners forum Id have to say, "the old grey mare aint what she used to be"......
If you want a 39 get an older one. Or if you want a Marlin of any sort for that matter get an older one. To many QC problems with 'em at the moment.I myself have a Browning BL22, which is a great little gun. Cant speak highly enough of it

Cheers, Scott.
