OH yea,i forgot its for the kids.......u made them U take care of them!!! Is the the end near??? I for one ...think if the gov/starts feeding the masses ..it can't be good...read the part about a least"40% of their students are entitled to public assistance". ...to take part in this FREE-B ...what they pulled this out of thin air??? ain't nothing free, and its going to all states/schools in 2014...........................................................;All Detroit Public Schools students from kindergarten through 12th grade will get free breakfast, lunch and snacks starting this fall under a federal pilot program, the district announced Tuesday.
Michigan's largest public school district said the program's goal is to "ensure all children receive healthy meals, regardless of income."
Most Detroit schoolchildren also meet income rules for free lunches.
Michigan, Illinois and Kentucky will participate in the U.S. Department of Agriculture pilot program during the upcoming school year. Districts in Michigan can participate if at least 40 percent of their students are entitled to public assistance.
"One of the primary goals of this program is to eliminate the stigma that students feel when they get a free lunch, as opposed to paying cash," said Mark Schrupp, the district's chief operating officer. "Some students would skip important meals to avoid being identified as low-income. Now, all students will walk through a lunch line and not have to pay. Low-income students will not be easily identifiable and will be less likely to skip meals."
The district said it still encourages parents to fill out family income surveys because funding for tutoring, after-school programs, extra teachers' aids, classroom technology and other services are still linked to income.

Hah, a few schools in my wife's district serve meals in the summer when no one is at school and it is open to the neighborhood. Whole families come down to the school to eat.

This situation once again reminds me of Benjamin Franklins sage advice for society:

I am for doing good to the poor, butI think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. I observedthat the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer.

82 % of the Farm Bill is food stamps and free meals to school systems.

My local public school does that. It's a damn good school and I'm okay with it. There are some really nice, cute kids with some POS parents, and often it's the only decent meal they get.

There's a lot of chit our government does that doesn't make sense. But putting a good meal in the belly of the child of a drug addict while they're getting an education isn't one of them. Chances are that poor kid doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell. Or perhaps maybe it does. The ONLY chance that kid has is education. Learning enough to know what mom is doing is wrong, and he/she doesn't have to live that way. Ask me how I know this...

Not my kids.

I don't ask anyone else to pay for mine, and I don't want to be forced to pay for someone else's.

If the kid is the child of a drug addict, lock up or put under the addict and put the kid somewhere else.

But, don't extort money from me or anyone else to take care of that kid.

If I, or someone else, or WE, choose to donate money to a charity to take care of them, fine. But, extortion to take care of them is simply wrong. It's theft.

A free lunch for every kid is getting ridiculous. We can't afford that. I wonder how many of those kids in that school actually eat the school lunches tho. I bet they are pretty crappy if they are anything like what I have seen!

That's the way it ought to be if you ask me. But for many, unfortunately it's not. Met my dad once when I was 20. Nice guy to talk to, but he didn't want anything to do with me.

Education is vitally important to this nation. If all we do is raise a bunch of inbred morons, at some point they'll out number the educated people. Sooner or later those morons are going to figure out they can vote. Where do you think your party will be then? There are a lot of things we could waste money on, but education is a good investment.

Now with that said, I'm certainly not saying we're geting our money's worth. For kids that don't get food at home, I'm okay with feeding them at school; least we have something to show for it. It's WAY better than siphoning every dollar off to support a teachers union, overpaid administration, and BS programs that don't work.

I heard that today and remembered when I was in school. They had a school lunch program back then but you had to pay for your milk and a portion of the cost of lunch.
It wasn't free.

Sorry to hear that. He missed out.

Yep. And, a great lesson is: "there is no free lunch".

Great. Donate to that. But, don't have that money extorted from other people to pay for it that don't believe likewise.

No disagreement. But, that's not really the issue.

Theft to support leaches is the issue. Stay on it.

The teachers I know don't care who feeds the kid, so he can pay attention, as long as someone does. Anybody can have kids. Not everybody takes care of the ones they do have. It's the same parents who treat school as free day care who send the kid off with nothing more than a bag of flaming hot cheetos to eat all day. If those kids don't learn because they don't eat, day in and day out, then we pay plenty down the road to incarcerate them.

But we shouldn't feed everyone. There should be a stigma to taking free food. Down the road, they may remember how it felt to take it, and not want to do it again.

I ain't for it. I"m just getting more and more tired every day of taking care of the rest of the US... Personally at this point I don't really care what happens if you can't find enough work/money to eat. You'd have brought it on yourself if you were here. Taxpayers are overburdened as it is. Enough is enough.

What happened to the days when if you had a child, or children, guess who was responsible? Its way PAST time to go back to that.

And I"m tired of hearing, but its for the kids..... its all brainwashing .gov crap.

Kevin, if only they got a real education, many graduate High School (or get a certificate of attendance) and can't read or do math at a 3rd grade level. That is not an education IMHO.
