Nice! Not my favorite tho'- I hope to find that pristine pre-war D28 stashed in the trunk of a 427 side-oiler Cobra parked under a tarp in some widow's barn some day. Yes, I know...but I can dream, dammit!

My younger daughter classical guitarist now has the Gibson that my grandfather Howell bought direct from the factory in Kalamazoo for $125 in the 19teens. (My grandmother taught four guitar methods and composed some absolutely exquisite git-fiddle music.) The tone of that grand ol' Gibson can still make grown men cry. In about 1955, a Gibson salesman told me that Gibson no longer made that model and that it would cost in the thousands if they did. I can't imagine how much it's worth now.

During the heyday of my work in industry, an impressive number of the illustrators whom I knew were refugees from the big-band era mostly guitarists, except for the former Harmonicats. I made the mistake of letting some of them pick and strum that ol' Gibson then had to hire both a taster and a bodyguard with tin ears. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Back when I was suffering from migraines, one great treat that still warms my heart was those glorious times when my daughter slipped quietly into my bedroom, sat down, and played a long medley of serene classical guitar music. Almost makes me long for more migraines. Is there any instrument better attuned to the human soul than the harp and the guitar?

Mr. Howell, this is totally off subject but your mention of migraines made me respond. My 11 year old daughter was suffering from debilatating migraines for the last three years. We had her on a max dose of Inderol, but it was becoming less and less effective. Our next option was to put her on another drug that had drastic side effects - something that we were unwilling to do.
I had previously asked her neurologist about magnesium and B12 supplements, after reading that they are sometimes effective for migraines. He just laughed it off as an old wives tale.
Long story told short, we tried the supplements and since the first night she took them she has not had a migraine. We have been able to successfully wean her off all of her medications. She has been pain free for almost a year.
If you or others are still suffering, please pass this on and give it a try.

I once had a music teacher who informed the class that no one can truly love music, who does not play an instrument. I beg to differ with her. I appear to have some sort of short-circuit between my brain and my fingers... learning to play guitar never worked out, but I surely do love classical guitar music.

HoundGirl, what type of music do you play and would you be willing to post a link to a piece of music that you are playing?

A friend of mine suffers from migraines, what types of B-12 supplements and dose amounts of magnesium?
I'll pass this along to her.

I'll have to make sure Barak sees this. He has migraines occasionally, but when he gets them, they are often debilitating... affecting his ability to see, move, and even to speak. Prayer has been very effective against them in the past <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />, but keeping them from starting at all would be even better. Thanks!

BTW, I am a great believer in vitamins and supplements. Sometimes we old wives actually know a thing or two...

HG,

That is a beauty! I love the fretboard and the nice maple on the back! Those 1950's Gibson necks are to die for!

Ken,

If you ever want to have your guitar appraised, I highly recommend you have George Gruhn do it. He is the authority on Gibsons in the USA, and would be the only one I would trust if I had a piece so precious.

A guy I know inherited one just like this.

His grandpa played in New Orleans in the 20's and 30's, and then they moved to Springfield Mo. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

Here's a link to my favorite baby: http://www.heritageguitar.com/models/MilEagleCustom.htm

Mine looks even better than the one on their website and sounds spectacular particularly through an amp loaded with Celestion speakers with Mullard's for power and Telefunken's in the preamp section. For those who don't know about Heritage, they are the old Gibson employees who didn't want to move from Kalamazoo when the company moved. They bought the old tooling and rented the original building and started making them again the way they were originally taught with choice solid woods and real abalone and mother of pearl rather than the plastic and laminates Gibon's now come with now. I also have the first 535 (like Gibson 335) off the Heritage assembly line. They are sweet playing and sounding guitars.

I have only been playing a couple of years....I am not that good....just LOVE to write songs and sing (I have a Martin HD28 LSV....good for bluegrass). I have gotten a lot better in the past year but I have a lot of work to do! I like a whole range of music....but my fav is folk and southern gospel bluegrass.....and OLD OLD OLD classic country. I also love Johnny Cash, Mary Gauthier (my fav singer/songwriter....has a LA cajun sound), Gillian Welch, Lucinda Williams, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams (senior), Loretta Lynn, Kitty Wells, Bill Monroe, Tom T. Hall (just LOVE old dogs, and children and watermelon wine), and Janis Joplin.....to name a few <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />!

I never liked country or bluegrass until I landed myself in east TN for a year after uni....I fell in love with all of it! I will never forget the night these old men (I am talkin OLD men that could barely walk) taught me how to do a two step. I think about that night soooo often...we were laughing so hard because I kept trying to lead...so I was stepping all over their feet <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />!! I loved all the live shows....all the families dancing and having a great time. I didn't know a soul when I got there but by the time I left....I had fallen in love with all the locals that had taken me under their wing. I miss 'em, hardcore!

Oh, and I just discovered a woman by the name of Tanya Tucker....I think she is old country....but I really like her music....a friend gave me a song called....ummmm...jeez...can't remember....something about going to TX when she dies...and San Antonio strole <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />.....fun sort of music with some TX twang/drawl.

That is a super fine fiddle.

I may never actually buy one, but as far as electrics go right now, these are the ones I'm kicking around in my head.

http://www.carvin.com/products/gis.php?guitarType=SB&serial=87186

http://www.guitar.com.au/guitars/electric/g&l/usa/Comanche.htm

I have an old Audiovox Les Paul copy with a floyd rose bridge and lock nut right now, it has a rear pickup from a '59 firebird in it and a Demarzio Al Demiola model up front. It sounds pretty good, but I would really like something with a bit more class.

Hound girl, Tanya was thirteen the year I got married the first time. ...sigh...

Actually, I'm more of a Chicago/Memphis type blues fan.

I'm getting better educated all of the time.
There is about twenty pages on just this one song, just under Bob Wills.

Willie has a new version of Milk Cow Blues, and so does George Straight. The Kinks did a version that doesn't even look similar.

Most all the old timers have done it before.

Even Elvis, and the Greatful dead.

This is the George Straight version;

Well I woke up this mornin'
Looked outdoors
I can tell my milk cow
I can tell by the way she loathes
If you see my milk cow
Please drive her on home
Cuz I ain't had no milk and butter
Since That cow been gone

Well you gotta treat me right honey
Day by Day
Get out your little prayer book
Get down upon your knees and pray
Cuz you're going to need me
You're gonna need my help someday
Lord you're going to be sorry
You treated me this way
Ooh now take it away boys

Sail on, Sail on, Sail on little gal, Sail on
Sail on, Sail on, Sail on little gal, Sail on
You're gonna keep right on to sailing
Till you lose your happy home

Well good evening
Don't that sun look good going down
I said well good evening
Don't that sun look good going down
Don't that ol' army cobb look lonely
When your lover ain't no place around

Well I tried everything baby
To get along with you
Now I'm gonna tell you
What I'm gonna do
I'm gonna stop my cryin
Gonna leave you alone
And if you don't think I'm leavin big momma
Just count the days I'm gone
You ain't gonna see me
You ain't gonna see my sweet face no more

Lord you gonna be wondering honey
Where in this world I've gone
Milk cow blues

And this is the Greatfull Dead version

Well, I woke up this morning
And I looked out the door
I can tell that that old milk cow
I can tell the way she lowed

Well, if you've seen my milk cow
Please ride her on home
I ain't had no milk or butter
Since that cow's been gone

Well, I tried to treat you right
Day by day
Get out your little prayer book
Get down on your knees and pray
For you're gonna need
You're gonna need your loving daddy's help someday
Well, then you're gonna be sorry
For treating me this way

Well, believe me, don't that sun look good going down?
Well, believe me, don't that sun look good going down?
Well, don't that old moon look lonesome
When your baby's not around

Well, I tried everything to get along with you
I'm gonna tell you what I'm going do
I'm gonna quit my crying, I'm gonna leave you alone
If you don't believe I'm leaving You can count the days I'm gone

Me, too! My family moved around so much when I was growing up that I never was part of band or orchestra. I begged my parents for piano lessons, but we didn't have a piano and they didn't want to acquire one (probably didn't want to think about moving it when the next inevitable move came).

But I DO love music, and the instrument I play now is my voice. Barak took me, when I couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, and made a halfway decent singer out of me. He has a gorgeous voice, acquired genetically from his family. They are of mennonite heritage, and can all sing beautifully and do harmony that will give you goosebumps.

No Cobra, but I did trade for a '38 D-18 that had been stored in a DOGHOUSE for years..... I swear I believe it had never been played, no pick scratches, no wear on the neck, just absolutley filthy, complete with a rat nest inside.. I've been playing it for 5 or 6 years now, and it's just now starting to limber up. Also picked up a mid-60's D-35 a while back, one of the last standard Brazillian Rosewood. Dang, it just occured to me, i've got almost as many guitars as guns.......

Most of my money i spent on women and whiskey. The rest of it, I just wasted!
