The RX1000 that my friend uses is equally as useless as previous attempts by Leupold. I'm glad yours works well, but they're apparently not all made equal.

I'm surprised that so many people hate the Leupold's. What is it about the ones you've used that made them trash? Poor ranging ability? Broke easily? Poor optic? Eats batteries?

I've owned the low-end RX-I for 4 years and never had a complaint with it. It's the only LRF I've owned, so maybe I just don't know what I'm missing. It has ranged for me very reliably out to 550-600 yards and on a reflective target out to about 7-800 (IIRC). I don't think I have a single bad thing to say about it. It's still on the original battery too...

What was it that everyone hated about the Leupolds?

Poor optics, imprecise reticle, cluttered FOV with an overly complex reticle, poor ranging capability, and a read-out that's too hard to see in low light.

Run a Leica, a Swaro, or a Zeiss and get back to us on the Leupold.

Pretty much what VAnimrod said, except that I didn't find the optics to be too terrible. But everything else is bang on, IME.

Compared to Leica, Zeiss, Swaro, and even the Bushnell LRF/Bino combo, the Leupold optics are markedly inferior.

Definitely not up to par with the big players, but the optics weren't the part of the RF that left a sour taste in my mouth. That's why I said that I didn't find the optics to be "too terrible". Just a little bit terrible *grin*

I have the Bushnell Elite 1500, works well for me. I mainly use it for just hitting targets rock faces etc... Haven't used it for hunting. will hit a water tower at 1400+ first time every time, 'course it's huge and white so take that for whatever it's worth.

A poster asked for a site listing the Bushnell Fusion for under $700.00. Just checked on Ebay and found listings for $665.00 - $698.94 with free shipping.

I just bought another. Had a Bushnell and a Leupold. Figured I'd try a Nikon. You had to say 1000 yards. I think the Swarovski was the only one I looked through I could see a thousand yards with. The aiming circle would be as big as a bus at that range, but hopefully you're ranging a grove of trees or something. It was 8X, and I think it had the best field of view of any I looked at. You've got to head down the Bass Pro or Cabela's and look through them all. It's not going to be easy.

i have a rx1000i and it is top shelf for dollars spend, was almost as good as the lieca for 200$ less. MUCH BETTER than my god aweful rx3 leupy range finder, and better than my nikon 1000 riflemen. great glass, love the adjustable reticle, an brightness, nad ranges deer reliably out to 700-750 in all weather.

My old RX III (1200yd) rangefinder simply would not range past 350 yards, had terrible battery life, poor optics, was complicated, was large, was hard to hold steady and the light inside the thing was a complete joke. The RX 1000 TBR has none of those problems and reminds me of my hunting buddies Leica in all of those areas. Maybe I got lucky with mine, but I feel mine is comparable to the Leica after using both.

Couple months ago, I needed to replace my then current Bushnell. It was a piece of junk. Went to a local store and looked at the Bushnell 1000 Scout. Being rather cool on another Bushnell purchase, I quizzed the clerk. If I bought it and gave it a good try, could I bring it back if it did not perform as the company stated it should.

Purchased and the next day gave it quite a workout. Even on flat ground, it read off the grass well. It did everything they said it would. Took it Sage Rat hunting and it was reading on a flat alfalfa field that was just cut. Got readings out past 300 yards on the flats. Then I took it chuck hunting and was able to range rocks to over 600 yards and the best, to 1042 yards on a reflective surface and over 600 yards on trees.

For my purpose, which is about shooting 250- 500 yards,it has surpassed my expectations. I think Bushnell has now learned how to make a range finder. This is my third one from over the years.

This is an interesting thread to me as I am looking for a good sub $400 range finder. Looks like the arc will fit the bill.
