Not sure whether this qualifies as a reloading question.......

Recently I shot some old Peters .303 Savage factory loads through my 1899. Over half of the fired cases had short splits in the shoulder/neck area, none extending as far as the case mouth. I've had the same experience with Remington .303 Sav. factory loads in the past, but not as great a percentage of split cases.

All of the .303 factory loads have to be at least 30 years old, is this problem due to the age of the brass? Am I correct in thinking that since not all of the cases split, it's not a problem with my rifle's chamber?
