It isn't big game hunting season yet. However, squirrel and crow season opens next week and I am going bring my dog and shotgun for a several day backpacking hunting/scouting trip into the Catskills. I can't wait. Anyone else on here backpack hunt for small game?

haven't been to the Catskills in years.. My cousins are still there, but Big game does open here next week and will be backpacking in for mule deer archery. I do backpack in for snowshoes later between archery(deer) and late rifle season(elk).

Total different game out there in the West. Most hunters around here use a stand and sit still in a tree or on a farm and sleep in the comfort of a home or cabin each night. I am either backpacking into the Cats and sleeping in a tent or bird/squirrel hunting closer to home. Hope to experience elk hunting like you guys do at some point.

There will be archery season open here next weekend for deer and elk, but I won't be hunting. My wife and I will be taking the llamas on a 3 day trip to some lakes she's never been to before. High altitude, about 9k, beautiful country. I've been there quite a few times - one of my favorite spots.

I haven't yet, but am planning a few overnight backpack trips into the one wilderness area in Indiana. If for nothing more than a reason to see it. Squirrel hunting is about my favorite non-big game hunting.

Not hunted, but backpacked overnight on the North Country Trail in north central PA. We ran into a girl last year who had been hiking from New York for close to a week. I'm pretty sure she said we were the first hikers she had encountered.

I have used coyotes as a excuse to backpack in the winter.
