Patford, I don't see the problem with no 6's to dispatch a badly wounded deer. If you're within ten feet, it'd pretty much have the same effect as a slug...
As for what to do faced with a wounded buck, it does slightly depend on what rifle you're carrying... I actually find it more difficult to shoot a beast at five yards than a hundred! If you've got QD mounts, I'd say whip off the glass and whack him in whichever vital presents itself. The top of the neck would be the ideal, I'd say...
The animals suffering comes before considerations of meat damage though...

Years ago my dad shot a little buck, ended up running out of shells and we killed the thing by hittin it over the head with an axe. You gotta do what ever ya gotta do.
