I've found an early model finnbear in 7mag that I may wind up with. What mount and ring setup are you L61R guys using? The scope will be 40-42mm max. The only other finnbear I had (sold it unfortunately), came with the original, older Sako rings and this one doesn't. I appreciate the help.

Probably in a medium as the low is loooow if I remember correctly. Or, to get by a little lighter and less bulky, try the Sako Ringmounts. Integral rings/bases. About 144 bux but worth it.

I've got a set of Millett Angle-Loc rings on my Finnbear and like them a LOT. They're strongly made from steel, but designed to be lightweight, and the ones made for Sako's fit very well: better than some other brands of Sako rings I've tried. And mine have held perfect zero for seven years now. Even though they are very adjustable, they hold zero very well when tightened down.

The millets work well and original sako rings are rock solid as well... DO not get a set of original Low rings, as said they would be too low.

Check the rear mount to see if the base surface is entirely flush or is it machined (indented) for purposes of having a movement catch. The catch has been overlooked by some aftermarket rings, whereas the original Sako rings have the catch machined in. Having both style of rings on different Sakos, both of significant kick, leads me to believe it does not make much difference but it is always on my mind and I can imagine not getting a scope eyebrow because of it.

I like the old style, all steel Sako ringmounts. This is the medium height, the new Sako rings labeled the same today are much higher. As noted above, the LOW in these is REALLY low and may be usable only with scopes with small ocular bells and small objective bells. I use my SAKO old style rings like this for my 3x Leupold on my Sako .375 H&H but for any larger scope look for medium (which is normally good to about 42mm objective, I think). If you can't find these style rings used (or if they are expensive) the current Leupold ringmounts are fine up to about .375 H&H recoil (a bit less if a heavy scope is being used). John

Luepold also makes a dual dovetail base set for the finnbear. I have them on one rifle and like them alot. They give you a lot more options for ring heights.

Conetrol mounts and rings on mine for the past 23 years. 'nuff said. I started out with the original Sako mounts, but they seemed to be snagging on my sleeves and anything else, installed Conetrol mount and ring and was happy.

I use the leupold sako rings. They are about $60 at cabelas. Original Sako rings are pretty pricey normally. I have a pair but a few of the screws are broken off.
